Bear attack on bush plane in Alaska...

Evidently the pilot left some good smelling stuff on the plane and a bear sniffed it out overnight. Did a number on it....anyway, the pilot has some duct tape and new rubber air dropped in and patched it up and flew her out. Ballsy if you ask me...check out rifle scabbard on wing strut.

Did anyone catch the recent Mythbusters about duct tape? They made a boat out of duct tape, a cannon out of duct tape, and hoisted a car off the ground with several strips of duct tape.

I think the duct tape repair job on the plane trumps their efforts, though!

Oh! Don't get me started about those of you from Washington State....

We know how tough all those guys are.

Someday we are going to redraw the Oregon and Washington State lines and divide the States in half right down the top of the cascades.....We will then have the western side......and the Eastern side.......woooooohoooooooo

My fathers had 150hp with a climb prop and it cruised around 93mph. I hated headwinds.

I hope not... because at 201 mph and above it would disintegrate...

Duck tape was called 200 MPH tape in WWII, because they would patch bullet holes in fighter planes with it. The proper name, BTW, is duck tape. When it was first developed, the cloth used in the tape was duck, a lightweight canvas. Later, someone tried to rename it duct tape, but it has been proven again and again that it does not work on metal ductwork, as in HVAC applications.

I think they used cotton a long time ago. Most are a polyester fabric I believe. Stitts, Ceconite, Polyfiber, etc.

Re: Bear attack on bush plane in Alaska...

Dacron actually, they also use a special Linen. Rick would know better, some of the old birds he works have dope and fabric flight controls.

The bush pilot/mechanic most likely used a pre doped fabric for the repair, which is why it looks silver. It probably was pre formed/sewed. That way he (or she) would only have to stitch the bottom seam, then dope the whole thing up and let it cure. The seams would be hand sewn anyway, but I would hate to have to do it in freezing cold weather, laying in the dirt.

Edit: I just notice the silver strips, that make it look like he used duct tape. I wonder what the whole story is.

OooooooKaaaaaay, I'm glad I didn't have to sign off that exrep (expeditious repair). I wonder if the story has been confirmed. I see that its posted on Discovery but I didn't see that it was reported by one of their journalists.

I know that you're not serious but I'm gonna have to say I highly doubt that is true. I'm sure that Rick61 could provide an educated guess as to what it would cost to make those repairs properly, per FAA regulations.

More than what that POS spam can is worth.... & then double it.

90% of the work takes 10% of the time... it's that last 10% of the work that's a bitch & takes 90% of the time.

I notice there are no *after* pics of the right horizontal....

Last major fabric I did was a set of wings for an N3N.. & that was quite a while ago.. Easier to farm it out to the amazing Rowena at Santa Paula.

The avitat factory had a bunch of women working in the fabric shop when I worked for a Husky dealer. They all had to be addicted to their jobs as I could not stay in there for more than a few minutes due to the strong odor.

How would that thing have flown if they just removed all the bad fabric on the fusealage, and repaired the elevator and tail?

and just how far do you think the air planr fixer upper was from them,
since they were in the alaskian wilderness with no way out but that plane?

I think the mileage fees to get him and material to there would have been more than the plane.
Like how you going to call for a tow of a wreck plane?

I have been using it for 22 years in the HVAC work i do, it works great for about 6 to 8 years, less if under sun light. still works better than anything else going
