    Cheapo Block-Off Plugs.......yet again

I think this may be what "dano" used.........see previous thread. Went to Lowe's. Found thesein the hardware section where they have the slide-out boxes of "specialty" nuts, bolts, wiggits, gizmo's, plugs, etc. I found these 5/8" "Metal Hole Plugs" made by Hillman for $0.87 each. They snap into place, are chrome, and can then be JB Welded from the inside. Sorry for the lousy pics.............

    You bet!!

They work great, and are a good fit. Just be sure to use some kind of a sealer / adhesive to insure a good seal, and to make sure they stay in place.

    I'm a big spender...I used nickels

I used nickels as well and sealed them w/ silicone however, when I tried to start my bike it sputtered and felt like it was running on 2 cylinders. Left it alone for a few days as I had to take care of some biz. Went back to my bike and it wouldn't start. It smells like it fouled the plugs (gas smell) does anyone have an answer as to why it wouldn't start? Bike was running fine before I removed all the smog hardware. all opinions welcomed. Thanks fellas

    Make sure the coil wires...........

..........are tight on the coils (the single wires going to the coil, not the plug wires)?? Gas tank lines all hooked up??

    No performance gain...........some say

........the "popping" during deceleration is less?? Basically, removing the hoses and the Nueter-EGR valve cleans up the area above the valve cover making future maint alot easier.

I have some black plastic / nylon plugs that fit the holes perfectly, and the plugs are so low-profile, you can barely tell that they are even in there.

But....I was worried about the heat issue and the plugs being nylon. Originally, I ran the nylon plugs for a couple of days and they looked to be fine. Still....I pulled them out and replaced them with the chrome metal plugs.

Another option is to tap the holes 1 3/8 NPT and put some brass (non rust) plugs in there. We did this to another bike last night. At 1.49 per plug it's a higher cost mod but it is solid and no issues with adherence, leaking, removal, or cure time (cuz it was too freaking cold last night to wait for the goop to cure). Just a suggestion.

Thats how I did mine, except mine only cost .78

I really didn't use any thing to seal the plugs either, just the paint after I installed them into the plates.

The freeze plugs are just a slight "interference" fit.
Had to keep them in the freezer, heated the plates in the oven, then "tamped" them in.

Really didn't need JB Weld or anything.

NO way the could leak, or come out.

But, your idea is cool too.

I/we couldn't remember what was used (freeze plugs) by others so we went the NPT route as it was available on short notice. Nothing wrong with the freezeplugs either, it's good to have choices. Cheap mods are great solutions and always add to the collective knowledge

Good call, Mav. That's what I just did. Airbox gone. That is the second most cost-effective mod on my bike now...next to my Home depot Chrome frame plugs. I paid $2.19 for both freeze plugs.

I left the hoses attached, removed the emissions stuff, and ran 3/8" rubber hose between the two. Two zip ties later, it was good to go.
