    Do You Miss It?

ďDo you miss it?Ē they axe.

For 400,000 accident-free miles over some
40 years, it was a major part of my life. 48 states, Iron Butt, so many bikes, so many rest stops, and a precious few rallies.
    Of course, I miss it.

But itís not the miles, not the adrenalin, not the toying with pushing the envelope THIS CLOSE to the edge that I reach back for.

The stories? Oh yeah. When it hailed so hard, all 50 of us took refuge under a rest stop and laughed our asses off when 4 kids on Harleys with no shirts pulled in looking like someone had shot them with red paint balls. Yessir!! Thereís hundreds more just as sweet.

Iím 72 now. Scared of texters, hit-and-runners and Donít Really Care-ers.

What I do miss is this: 10:00 pm, cold, Rhode Island night, logs on the fire, dogs asleep on the floor, and my pal, KennyZ and I building a Gat-Damned Baddazz ZRX together. We be talking about wimmens, rock-n-roll and 10 mm or 14mm until we canít no more.

Yes, Iíd like to ride the Blue Ridge one more time. But it no longer DRIVES me. Iím OK with walking away.
I feel like I walked into a casino, put a quarter in the machine and won. I miss the rush of one more pull, but I do feel like I pulled the lever for 40+ years, Iím still alive and Iíve wonÖ and Iím OK with that.

For most of my adult life, I acknowledged, ďI canít imagine what my life would be like without a bike!Ē Now I know. Life goes on and itís ok.

I miss the people.. you guysÖÖÖ.. you know who you are.

    Your Pal,
    Unkie Dal

Yep, in a big way You'd enjoy reading this: http://www.zrxoa.org/forums/showthre...ustin-and-back .

My wife and I are talking about taking a vacation out there. I have a lot of family all over New England. Mainly I want to go so I can go from seafood restaraunt to seafood restaraunt lol. I'm pretty sure I've got your email address. If I get out that way I'll have to stop by and visit.

OMFG... that is AWESOME Steve!!!! Man, you just made my day.

Problem: If you go to New England to eat fresh fish, lobstah, scallops, seafood, grilled anything,
    I won't be there.

We moved to St. Augustine, Floriduh, where tight decreasing radius corners are illegal. lmao.

There are only TWO GUys on Ducs and they think "chicken strips" are something you order from MacDonalds.

Not sure I know enough to agree.

I have "skills". I won Texas State Champion ping pong player at 14.

But, I made the mistake of going from non-rider to 1200 cc bike rider too fast..
and EVERYONE rode better than me.

Yes, I knew what I was doing, but never could push it like Groovie Doobie,
JoeFech, Boz, DucGirl and the long, long list.

"Accident-free" for all those miles was 90% knowledge. IMHO.

Great to hear from you, Dallas! Keep checking in once in a while, and learn how to post pics so you can share your new hobby.

BTW, Carne is back at Rhode Island for another couple weeks finishing up his XO school. He'll have the rank of Commander soon. Still has his ZRX; I sure enjoyed borrowing it & riding with you when he was out there last time.

One of these days I'll get to Florida. Be great to meet up again.

The Hurt report was something I read , along with a posted MSF class instruction I found when I began riding at age 32 - both were very influential to my approach to riding at a later stage in life and both were , as the Brit's say - spot on

you may ride again, you may not

I do not have the absolute thrill for riding as I used to as 50 is next summer - but I am better for it imho and I hope I always have a bike for a ride if desired

I admire commuter riders - I live under 2 miles from work , so it makes not much sense to ride a bike with atgatt for less than 2 miles - stay well

    Re: Do You Miss It?

DalPal!!! In Flo'da??? GOOD FOR YOU MAN!!! I'm ready to get out of this cold, crappy state.

HEY! One of my favorite stories! 2010. HOLY CRAP! Almost 10 years ago!

You, DonBob, Cindy & I rode down to Skeenah. Cindy & I were to meet you and DonBob around Harrisburgh, PA.

Well, Cindy & I got really happy the night before and got a really late start... Oh crap! Going to be late meeting DalPal and DonBob!

So we hit the road runnin'. Making tracks and time. A coupla-20 miles before Harrisburgh, on RT 81, I saw a pair of bikes riding in formation. Getting closer, bike's are green. And one guy is clashing with his red leather pants. Get close and DonBob waves back at us. Cindy & I pull out, pass, getting another wave from DonBob, pull in front and take lead.

About 5 minutes later I think you realized who we were 'cuz you pulled out, drew along side and waved! Then slipped back into formation.

Last gas of the day we iced down the case of beer I'd split into the saddle bags and by the time we got to Front Royal they were PERFECT!

That was a great trip. Name: DSCN1956.JPG

How did you make that tank? Was it inspired by the shape, then thinned down, or is actually a ZRX tank that's been modified? It looks awesome and seems like it'd leave more room for lower handlebars. Is there a thread on this build somewhere?
