    We get in 18 inch round by 12 foot bars. Certed material. Around 48000 each.

    Given the cost of the material would they normally run a practice blank in a cheaper metal or is machine time too valuable?

    Depends on the part, but yes sometimes they will machine parts out of aluminum to test fit.

    That said the CAD/CAM systems are so good now that many will go straight to machining. You can verify everything now in software to ensure there are no mistakes. Not 100% full proof but 99% solid, the other 1% is operator error.

    Yeah if you YouTube Titans of CNC he has thousands of videos, really great guy and total machining badass. My machine salesman is also his......trying to hook up with him as heís close to me about 1.5 hours away.
