1974 KZ400 - too bad my garage is full...

Will need a lot of work but it looks salvagable to me from the photos.
Not far from here. He is asking 555EUR OBO.

I would offer half, only if the crankcase is not full of water, it turns with kickstart and tank is not rusted inside.

Used the other half for a good soda/sand blaster, etc. Big gamble from what I can see in the pics. $$$

Well, that one looks like it's been outside for a very long time.
But I would go for it too, if the engine isn't frozen up. But we're looking at a lot of work here!

You have too much to do to spend that kind of time saving that. I feel sorry for neglected bikes, and they call out to me, "Help! I'm dying here!" as I drive past. I could save some, but the reward would be a cute bike that is so slow I might not ride it. If there was a gathering place for coffee and old bikes nearby, that may make it more interesting.
The ZRX may ruin you for slow bikes.

PSA, Aluminum does nut rust, it corrodes

The problem with cast aluminum is that it corrodes into the metal grain, especially when you have green acidic mold growing on it, nearly impossible to remove, move on, run forrest run.

Mate, you're supposed to talk me out of it not into it.
Recently with every second ad for an old bike you'd read something like "cafe racer base" in the title. I hope this hype will end soon before too many good bikes are hacked up.

That was what I was thinking and tried to look at it through rose-colored glasses but probably it is too late for this poor old bike like the others said too.

You're so right with everything said above Bill. It breaks my heart to see that little 400 like that. Also the ZRX might have spoiled riding those little bikes for me but even if my little Gipsy might not be as powerful as the Rex, I still love to see her standing in the garage in her restored beauty and the ease that she takes turns with is addictive in its own way.
Having that said, the Red Thumper is in another league - not nearly as fast or a beauty like the other two but just a kick-ass hoot to put a wide grin on your face. Don't know how that works but it does.

I saw that and maybe the results that I got out of restoring the Gipsy lead me to think I could cope with that but maybe you're right and this one has gone too far beyond the line...

I looked up a company already and queried how much it would cost to replace all the spokes in those wheels...
I do hope the ad will disappear very soon.

Re: 1974 KZ400 - too bad my garage is full...

    Hm...

I called the seller and he sounds like a reasonable guy.

He said that he bought it from a farm where it stood for +10 years covered in a barn. The cover did not reach over the one side facing a wall which might explain the green mold.
He carefully turned the engine over with the kickstarter and it turned smoothly but he did not want to do any harm so he just gave it one try.
He says the tank has some rust inside but it appears salvagable to him.

There's no papers (title) or keys to be found (not uncommon for these barn finds). The LH side cover is missing but there are several to be found on the market.

He said I should come over and give it a closer look. I am almost inclined to do so...

    I like it Heino....!

I think it would be a 'Lot of work'....,but doable and and an enjoyable challenge..!

Rough as a badger at the moment..,and Certainly needs a "Tidy up"..

    €550 is a wee bit much....,but he'll come down.

I would give it a 'look'.....(what's the worst than can happen..?? )

Heck...,it's the winter.....and that means one thing..(a Project.!!)

    Thanks Brian.

The price will have to go down significantly, that's for sure. But still it would be a LOAD of work (way more than with the Gipsy “tidy up”).

If I would bring the four currently unused bicycles into my mum-in-law's spacious basement, that would free up some room in the garage/shed...

Anyway, first things first - I will take a look at it and as it has been said, what's the worst that could happen?

    I must be

I fully agree with Brian too. Might be a lot of work, but it is so satisfying bringing a "lost"bike back to it's former glory.
Take you GPZ for instance, I read the whole project Topic about it, and look how it looks like now..A beauty!

In real life it looked way worse than the pics were telling.
I had to turn my back on her and walk away.
Would have required too much work and money even under the best circumstances.

I do have something else on the radar though - not a Kawi this time, I have to admit.
