    Happy Veteran's Day.
40 years ago I was a sailor on an aircraft carrier. Time sure does fly.

    I AM A VETERAN

    by Andrea Christensen Brett

You may not know me the first time we meet

Iím just another you see on the street

But I am the reason you walk and breathe free

I am the reason for your liberty

    I AM A VETERAN

I work in the local factory all day

I own the restaurant just down the way

I sell you insurance, I start your IV

Iíve got the best-looking grandkids youíll ever see

    Iím your grocer, your banker

    Your childís schoolteacher

    Iím your plumber, your barber

    Your familyís preacher

But thereís part of me you donít know very well

Just listen a moment, Iíve a story to tell

    I AM A VETERAN

I joined the service while still in my teens

I traded my prom dress for camouflage greens

Iím the first in my family to do something like this

I followed my father, like he followed his

Defying my fears and hiding my doubt

I married my sweetheart before I shipped out

    I missed Christmas, then Easter

    The birth of my son

But I knew I was doing what had to be done

I served on the battlefront, I served on the base

    I bound up the wounded

    And begged for Godís grace

I gave orders to fire, I followed commands

I marched into conflict in far distant lands

In the jungle, the desert, on mountains and shores

In bunkers, in tents, on dank earthen floors

While I fought on the ground, in the air, on the sea

My family and friends were home praying for me

For the land of the free and the home of the brave

I faced my demons in foxholes and caves

Then one dreaded day, without drummer or fife

I lost an arm, my buddy lost his life

I came home and moved on

    But forever was changed

The perils of war in my memory remained

I donít really say much, I donít feel like I can

But I left home a child, and came home a man

    There are thousands like me

    Thousands more who are gone

But their legacy lives as time marches on

    White crosses in rows

    And names carved in queue

Remind us of what these brave souls had to do

Iím part of a fellowship, a strong mighty band

Of each man and each woman

Who has served this great land

    And when Old Glory waves

I stand proud, I stand tall

I helped keep her flying over you, over all

    I AM A VETERAN

I think that I might have been too young back then to realize what an honor it was to serve. As I get older I am proud to say that I'm glad I did,
It was a troubled time during the Vietnam era.
Thanks to my fellow brothers & sisters and also to those who take time to thank us.

I did not know. Holy smokes. For you Sir >>>>

It must be an unwritten code of silence. I had a superintendent that was new to me some 20 years ago. I knew he had served. Some TWO YEARS later we were discussing something and Wayne made mention of jumping out of airplanes while in the service. I poked, prodded and then flat out demanded that he tell me the details. When he said "I was in the 101st Airborne" I went totally silent. As the hair stood up on the back of my neck. I was among true royalty. I looked at him in quiet awe every time after that.

    Re: Veterans Day

Joe, I never jumped into danger!
I joined in '72 during the Vietnam era but never went there, came close as our basic was cut short by two weeks for jump school.
After a knee injury I went to Air Assault school and repelled from helicopters to stay with the 101st Airborne/Air Calvary team.

Did see quite a bit of action and fighting though, mostly in the bars in Germany......

    Re: Veterans Day

We, in Europe remembered the armistice, and the ending of World War one today.
As a collector of militaria of these times, ans a frequent visitor of the old front-lines, and a decendant of a soldier who fought in this war, who fortunately survived the carnage,
I followed it closely. Years ago, I was busy helping archeologists unearthing remains of soldiers with no known graves. In the region of Ypres, for who may know the place.
For years and years, I walked the old front-lines, after the farmers had plowed them.
The things I found on those fields were unbelievable. They are still there. A jawbone, a piece of someone's skull..
But after digging up at least 12 human remains, lying were they fell, most of them in the positions how they died made me stop doing that.

    War is hell.

    Lest not forget.
