AV80R starts making scrap metal - Taig Micro Lathe

BG Wells and KWICK have infected me with the machinist bug, so when I saw a good deal on a Taig Micro Lathe with a bunch of accessories on eBay, I started bidding.

By the time it was all said and done, I won the auction. It was $447 to my door including shipping and tax.

When it showed up, the seller did a horrible job packing it. Well, he didnít really pack anything. He just threw it in a box and sent it USPS.

Here are the accessories that arrived first. No cushion or packing and holes in the box meant some screws and collets and who knows what else went missing.

I inventoried everything and tried to organize stuff.

Then a few days later the actual lathe arrived. No surprise, the box was damaged and he didnít pack it well.

The lathe was covered in wood shavings and surface rust. I didnít take any before photos, but here it is after about 45 mins of disassembly and cleaning.

The wiring in the box for the switch was sketchy with electrical tape as the only isolation from a short. I got a few sparks when I first turned it on so the first order of business was rewiring it to ensure itís safe.

The seller refunded me $200 for doing such a bad job packing it. So the eBay purchase went down to $247 which is ďcheap as chipsĒ as they say.

Here are some before/after of cleaning some parts.

I placed a small order to Taig for some odds and ends just because I hate money.

Hereís the breakdown of what I have so far. The first table is the cost of everything If I had bought new. The second is what Iíve actually spent so far.

Iím a total amateur so if you want to be amused watching me screw up and learn, this is the thread for you.

Here is a video of my first chips with some scrap aluminium I had laying around.

I just used the tool that was in the post when I got the lathe.

How the heck are you doing this in the middle of the work day? Shouldn't you be sitting in a cube staring at your 'Stitch?

And is said Micro Lathe domiciled at the burrow (I see weird/unfamiliar flooring in the background of the short video)? Or has it found its way into a corner of the hangar?
I'm not completely useless. I can always be used as a bad example.

From what I can tell, I lost a couple collets and some screws/nuts. Not great, but not terrible.

The ĎStitch sits outside my cube so I have to stare at a LCD screen instead.

The lathe is at home in my garage so I can more easily tinker with it after coming home from work on weekdays.

All the action happened late last night but I hit the sack since I had to get up at 5am and my thread was delayed to today.

    Ok, yes...Iím slacking at work!

    Indeed it should.!

I am pulling up my chair for a closer look.!..

Arash.....,you got my number.,my Email.,and my full attention.!

Oh and don't use that "tool" to machine like that in the youtube clip....the Point will leave ridges/lines on the finish..

Use either one of these indicated...position its tip at a 1~2į clearance angle to the work for a much cleaner finish...

Many congratulations on this new new source if fun and creativity.!

I was bummed out too, but then when I realized only a few items were lost and that the seller wanted to give me almost half the purchase price back, I got over it pretty quickly!

Cannot edit....,but here is a little clip I put up of myself machining "your" Ti rear axle..(20mm grade 5 Ti)

Anyway...look at the tool I am using...the angle of its cutting tip to the work and the finish..(when I stop the clip)

    Helpful indeed!

This book KWICK turned me on to has been really valuable too.

The video from last night was an impromptu effort to just make some noise and chips late at night after I got the switch rewired.

I realize now there was so much wrong with that tool selection and position, but at least the height was centered!

I wanted to source some brass, but only had a few minutes to do a quick google maps search and pick a metal supply house to hit on the way home.

The place I picked only carried stainless and aluminium, no brass.

I went to their off cuts room and they had rows and rows of square blocks and sheets of aluminium, but I finally managed to find a couple short pieces of rod.

The smaller one is 1Ē diameter and the other is about 1 3/8Ē. No idea what kind of aluminium it is.

$5 for 3 lbs. Now I need a band saw!
