I HATE scraping old gasket material!

Finishing up my clutch replacement and started scraping gasket material off the case halves only to find less than 10% of the gasket stuck there. WooHoo! Awesome!

Start the clutch cover and hoping that most of the gasket is loose or at least not hard and brittle. Nope. The remaining 90% of that gasket is hardcore stuck and not wanting to give up without a fight.

I used the spray on it first, made the scraping a very simple job.

Motion pro has a brass bladed scraper that works great. Highly recommended

Yeah, I'm taking my time and checking the blade and scraper. Already replaced one blade and filed my scraper before I started.

My biggest concern is slipping with the blade and cutting myself, so I'm going slow. Think my next project is going to be making a jig out of plywood and 2x4's that I can bolt to my bench top so I can use two hands to apply steady pressure instead of scraping with one hand and holding the cover with the other.

I like the idea of a brass scraper. I'll check Motion Pro's website.

Doesn't look like it's very available here in the states, is there a warning about it on painted surfaces?

No specific warning for paint that I can recall (I can check tonight when I am home) - but I did a spot test prior to use.

I found that if you left it on the for the specified time no paint was damaged, but leaving it on for extended period of time it did start stripping the paint (not to the extent that paint stripper does though, just made the top layer a bit chalky).

Years ago, I had a spray on gasket material remover. The stuff worked great! Can't recall the name or brand though. I'm talking about 30 plus years ago.............

"Paint" the gasket with gasoline. Use a small brush. Let soak. Remove. First remove the Marlboro Red from your lips.

Sad that gasoline can't be promoted for its 1,001 uses.

I try to use brass or plastic whenever possible when scraping. Don’t want to remove anything more than just the gasket

Ya, I found it that, weird that it's not available at every auto parts store. All the other links are to Australia and New Zealand.

You’d think it would be at every Autozone.

I use denatured alcohol which is my favorite for softening up gaskets along with the Motion Pro scraper Steve516 posted.

3M specialty adhesive remover also works some times. Depends what kind of gasket and goop were used etc

    Done.

    I cheated though.

I very carefully applied using Q-tips making sure to only put enough to blot on the gasket only. Then I had dinner.

About 45 min later it came off pretty easily with my freshly sharpened scraper without too much force. It did remove a fair amount of the paint, but only from the surface under the gasket. No peeling or bubbling visible anywhere else. The stuff I used is more of a gel, not runny at all. If it would have been a liquid I wouldn't have used it. This stuff stayed where it was applied without migrating anywhere else.

    Finished product....

looks good - you can remove the sound / vibration damper if you want - probably will never notice it is gone (I don't). Do make sure to clean the oil tube and make sure it is installed though - and the small port etc.
