Re: Well Crap, New Tires On, Test Ride, and...

I was still having some kind of issue after the wheel swap. Really paid attention to it on this ride and it felt more like it was coming from the rear.

My thinking now was it was chain related or the counter shaft sprocket, since I couldn't see it.

Put the bike up on the rear stand, took the sprocket cover off, started the bike and slammed it into gear (no clutch).

Sure enough, the bike was shaking really bad, sprockets looked fine. Shut off the bike, checked the eccentrics again since I had just put on the stites ones when I put the new rear tire on.

Yep everything in alignment and everything tight. Started to lube the chain and viola, a tight spot. But the lube did not help, chain seemed pretty limber when I started anyway.

So, what the F. Check the eccentrics again, check. Inspect the sprockets as they are rotating, round, no wobble, check.

Now start marking the chain where it is tight, find the master link (easiest thing to follow).

Tight when it gets to the bottom of the countershaft sprocket. Loose when it gets halfway to the rear sprocket, about half a wheel turn.

Doesn't get tight again until the master link gets to the exact same spot again on the countershaft sprocket, half a wheel turn later it's loose.

So I call Kwick to be sure I'm doing all the correct things, we go over everything again.

    Conclusion, Bad Chain.

New chain will be here in 2 days.

Oh ya, no other damage from the 2x4, forks are fine, pipe is fine, I feel very lucky. Thanks for all the nice words.

    CHAIN THREAD.

So, what chain have you ordered for which you await its arrival?
I'm not completely useless. I can always be used as a bad example.

Odd that the bike ran smooth before the incident but not after and it's suddenly a chain gone bad. Seems the bike would have been shaking before the incident if the shake is chain related. I bet that 2x4 somehow kinked the chain.

Doesn't matter though. At least you thought to inspect it and found a problem.

So what chain lube do you use?

ZRX is like a wife with a credit card you never get it paid for one way or another. Chain is still better than laying it down for sure.

Pete just rear your thread here so glad your all right and didn't go down... scary things about ride a bike is crap in the road as others here have stated.

Sorry you messed up some parts but man sure could have been much worst.

My worst experience of hitting something in the road was a cement block... I was riding a brand new Kawasaki F8 250cc endure bike to work one morning... I did just what someone said, stand up on the peg and gas it... still about went of the bars but if I hadn't stood up I believe I would have crash. Bent the hell out of both rims and cut both tires... I felt very lucky that day.

The amazing part to this story was... how does a concrete block fall out of a truck or off a trailer and not bust up??

Glad you're ok and had the parts needed to repair your bike... well almost, not everyone keep a new chain around

Since this bike has been through a few hands, I don't know the history of the chain. So I'm guessing maybe the last time it was adjusted, the tight area was in a position where it was being measured for slack, so it never got tight, the other area just got really loose. Then when I put on the new eccentrics and adjusted for slack again, it was not and the tight spot showed up. I don't remember spinning the wheel after I adjusted for slack to see if it had changed. I did it at that one spot and assumed, since I've never seen a chain do this.

Good lesson to check tension at different spots on your chain.

I hit a big pot hole on the BMW GS, I sent the dented alloy
rim to Woody's, he fixed it like new for $200.

you could not find it after , and he didn't muss the paint.

New chain is on, rode it to work this morning as well as a test ride yesterday, rides great.

Used zx-14 wheels off ebay cost less than having this wheels little bend in it straightened.

Good to hear your back in action. I Had my chain go bad on me riding back from the Int'l Rally in 2011. It got so bad, that I thought it was going to throw itself into the engine case or me! Same exact symptoms. It only takes a tight link or two to ruing an otherwise good chain.

BTW, I have been hearing more chatter on ZX-14 wheels for the ZRX. Old Kawboy posted up some nifty work with ZX-10 wheels on his ZRX. My burning question is; How much modifying needs to be done? - Cush?, Spacer, rear brake retrofit? Inquiring minds?

I hate it when people drop shit on the road. There's really no excuse for it. I see people hauling questionable loads in pick ups or trailers all the time and you just know they're going to drop something.

My biggest pucker moment came in about 1983 driving I-5 north in the Camp Pendelton area in my '68 MGB at night. In the fast lane topped out at, oh, 80, maybe (it was downhill) and I see something looming ahead in the fast lane. Swerved to the right just in time as the lights lit up a washer or dryer sitting dead center in the lane. Damn dim headlights thanks to Lucas Prince of Darkness. You could out-drive the high beams on that car at 60 MPH, let alone 80. It would have been a very uncomfortable impact.

Glad you are OK and hope that it's just a bent wheel.
