    Issues with stock clear coat?

This is going to seem odd. I have a pristine 2003 green zrx 30K miles owned since new bike.
I noticed several deep scratches in the clear coat on my tank. Very straight and i would have sworn some one took a knife to it. You can catch a nail on them. Looking closer, I some of them actually go under the tank emblems. I have always parked in the garage or in a parking garage, but a job change has forced me to park in the open sun this summer. Not sure this has anything to do with it but its the only new variable.

Regardless, im sick about it. Not sure what my options are to fix it but I would really want to avoid having it repainted. Its only in the clear coat and not into the paint or stripes The bike looks brand new with no hazing just 4 obvious scratches.

This happen to anyone else or any idea what is going on?
    Any ideas on remediation?

I just bought a half cover to use to prevent further damage if that is the actual cause.

They are in the decals, correct?

If so, the decals have cracked.

    20 year old paint deteriorates.

Buy a brand new tank from Kawasaki.

Re: Issues with stock clear coat?

This is a somewhat common problem with ZRX tanks. Its been reported here by more than a few members. Blue 03s seem to be the most susceptible. I seem to remember it being more common in northern climates indicating that it could be cold temp related. We here in the northern states see huge temperature swings between summer/winter, i.e.; expansion/contraction. There is likely nothing that you can do to prevent it. A tank bra certainly isn't going to make any difference.

Got one myself. It was there when I bought the bike in April. I wondered how that kind of scratch could happen, but I'll go with decal cracking.

I'm in the Montreal area, not sure if the bike was kept outside at some point during winters.

Same here. Don't have a great pic of it but you can see it in the grey stripe.

And those decals are no longer available too, no?

What's the best option if I was going to have it repainted? Vinyl decals or custom paint job? I love the color as it is, so I'd like to have it as much the same as possible. Even with ColorRite, I'd like to get those stripes good.

I've got one in my gold stripe that is perfectly vertical so it doesn't look too bad. You have to look pretty hard to see it thankfully.

Very nice job! I don't think I could do such a job myself though, I lack most of the equipment for painting, so I'd get it done somewhere.

Any clue on how to get the stripes for an '03? I've searched the forum for those on and off for them but I think they're no longer available and no one makes them. I guess a local decal maker could make something similar.

Re: Issues with stock clear coat?

A little off topic but still fuel tank related.

When I purchased my 2003 ZRX, the fuel tank neck that the gas cap attaches to, was crooked. So much so, that it was obvious to me.

Of course, the dealer didn't notice that......until I pointed it out to them. I told them that it was a major point of contention, and that I wouldn't buy the bike until they remedied the situation.

They told me they'd order a new fuel tank. I got that in writing, as well as an invoice showing it ordered at no charge to me.

Anyways, within about three weeks, they called to tell me the tank was in. I rode down and they swapped tanks for me. I did inspect the new one prior to them installing it.

Happy to see them do the right thing. They refused to replace the front rim for me though when it was leaking air. About 1 lb. per day. Bike was still under warranty too. I had to go to my local Kawasaki dealer and they did it for me. They even verified that the rim was leaking air from an area near the hub. Poor casting or whatever I suppose.

    Chicken.

I painted my first complete car...first paint job ever...with a $40.00 Astro spray gun and a one HP Campbell Hausfield compressor. In my garage. It was my white Volvo station wagon.

Would a 1/3 peak HP compressor do

I need a bigger one. My problem is space now: a bigger compressor isn't really the problem, it's all the woodworking tools my father left me. Some cast iron table saw, jointer, planer... With the workbench, toolcart and my other tools and two bikes in a 14x24ft garage I'm playing Tetris anytime I want to get something done or stored now.

On my lap around the US., I woke up in California with what looked like a cellophane cigarette pack wrapper stuck on the top of my tank...…….As I pulled it off, I realized it was my clearcoat...……..

That's how we all learn I guess, right? I blew up the automatic transmission only first car after deciding to the engine on my own (a 95 Mazda MX-3). Converted the car the manual after that. Good moments with by dad back then who taught me about mechanic work doing that, bypassing ECU controls and all. Everything was low budget as I was in my early twenties back then, but reading up on the subject and taking my time turned out to have a successful build in the end. Since then, that's how I tackle most projects, take it slowly, read up on it and get advice from knowledgeable people.

I did my first paint job with a 1 hp Campbell Hausfiekd compressor, a Astro Binks #7 copy gun and my garage and a 24” box fan.

I had one two hour lesson by the owner of Space Age paints.

It came out really nice. This was in 1984.
