    AV80R's BMW R1200RTP "Poncherello"

    New bike, new thread.

Bought this 2014 BMW R1200RTP from the City of Turlock PD when Carl (green12) tipped me off to the public auction.

It started at $500 and bid up to $6112 when it was all said and done and I won.

I'm using this bike to alleviate my 26 mile (one way) commute from Pleasanton to Sunnyvale for my new job that I'm starting this Monday.

Driving to Sunnyvale in the morning isn't too bad if I leave by 6am, but from 3pm to 8pm, the return trip is 1.5 hours in a car. This bike will cut that in half.

Here's the day I picked it up and Carl greeted me.

It was pretty filthy so the first order of business was an ACF-50 bath

My step dad is a retired San Jose police officer and rode Kawasaki's and Harley's. He retired before the BMW's came on the scene.

    He really likes this bike!

Went to the BMW dealer and got hammered financially to buy spark plugs, oil, filter, crush washers, final drive oil, a plastic screw cover, some screws, the triple clamp emblem, and a bulb.

    Into the service bay...

    Pull the drain plug

    Replace this missing fairing screw

This rear brace was in place with no screws, so o got some replacements

Flashlight and nightstick holder goes back on

    AR-15 mount reinstalled

    Map light reinstalled

Helmet lock has no key so off it comes

By now all the oil was drained so I installed the plug with a new crush washer

The oil filter is easy to access. It's a BMW one on there now. No FRAM!!!

    New BMW filter

I don't smear oil on the filter seal, I use dielectric grease

Sight glass for oil level. Took 4 liters to get to the top of the glass.

Glad I bought extra screws. I found two more missing on the fairings.

The key is used on the rear fender to pop the trunk open.

    Pretty dirty

I did a quick wipe down, nothing too crazy. I also moved the bar at the front of the seat down from the higher John Baker setting to the lowest, Francis Poncherello setting.

The seat went down a little more than an inch. Much better for me.

BMW cover for $50 will be useful.

Reinstalled the front take down and alley lights.

More to follow. I still have to replace spark plugs, adjust valves, and change the final drive oil.

Traffic vest belongs to my step dad, the retired SJPD.

Bike came from Turlock PD and all the emergency equipment was removed.

I happened to run into a batch of this stuff because I was "lucky".

It used to hold all the police radio equipment. Now it's just an empty box which when you close the lid, can hold anything you want safely inside.

I wiped it on with a microfiber towel (the yellow Costco ones you always see in my threads). I let it soak for a day and then I used a clean one to buff the excess off.

A thick coating allows it to soak in and penetrate, but I wipe it off because it will collect a lot of dirt and grime.

It did a great job of rejuvenating all the plastic and metal. It even got the stubborn water spots off the paintwork.

I've heard of people fogging the whole bike, but I always go with the more tedious hand application because it really helps agitate the gunk off.

Or I use a piece of aircraft cable thru my full face and then to the lock.

I think California LE agencies use red lights. No law against red (or amber) flashing lights facing the rear.

It's 100% legal as it sits now. No red or blue to the front and no siren or PA system.

I can even legally put an unloaded AR-15 in the mount, but that won't be happening for obvious reasons.

Here's a blue one I tried on for sizing at the BMW dealership yesterday.

Riding with a full face behind that giant windscreen at lower speeds is not very comfortable.

And yes, I know...modular helmets are not safe, etc...at 15 mph splitting lanes, I'm willing to take the risk.

I bet! Before ACF-50 and other products like it, people used to fog their entire airplanes with WD-40. Holy crap was that dangerous! Basically a giant bomb filled with flammable fumes like you mentioned.

Most agencies strip all that stuff off because they don't want civilians having cop stuff. Some agencies leave everything on though. I have known a bunch of cops who buy these with all the police goodies and do funeral escorts.

Some of the bikes I looked at in LA had all the copper goods on it too.

Here's a Honda that was $3000 and had everything, they didn't remove a single item. It even still had the siren. The dealership removed the red/blue lights to the front to cover their own ass through.

The comfort and maneuverability because of all the weight being down low is amazing.

I would love to try the 1250 waterboxer or "Wet Head" now that I'm hooked on the oil cooled "Cam Head". I guess that's what they call mine...the 2010-2013 DOHC version of this engine (2010-2014 for authority models).
