    Re: AV80R's BMW R1200RTP "Poncherello"

So as posted before, it was supposed to be about 1 hour 20 mins home in a car. Realistically, it would actually end up being 1 hour 30 mins to 1 hour 40 mins.

It took me 41 mins to get home, and that was splitting lanes carefully.

The bike is much wider than everything I own, so it's not as slippery splitting lanes as those. But I don't want to split fast anyways, and it's larger size does just fine.

It felt better and better the more I rode. This is day 1 so I'm sure I'll get more comfortable as time goes on.

Every motorcycle I caught up to while splitting waved me by and then fell in behind the big ol RT.

At one point, I was a linebacker for 6 motorcycles following me.

Cagers really gave me a lot of room and some freaked out and pulled way out of the way when they saw it in their mirror.

I pulled over twice into the normal lanes to take a break from splitting and only one guy kept going, the rest pulled aside and waited for me to speed up again. I was hoping someone else would run interference for awhile.

Sometimes I think I might actually prefer/enjoy living a little further away from the city so i can get more miles in. My wife heads out of the city from our place so it wouldnt impact her at all. It would just be painful either dropping my son off at his current school or changing school for him (really wouldnt want to do that).

Other times I finish my 20 mins of traffic bashing (for 9km) and think that I would hate to have to do it any further.

Lane splitting in Texas is technically not illegal . However there is a law to maintain your lane . I was reading Texas traffic laws for motorcycles last week .
Was told some supposed new law passed in Texas to allow a motorcycle to run a red light after sitting so many cycles with no light change . Turned out to be bogus according to DPS .
When in California I couldnt keep up the pace of my friend on his Aprilia . Finally said F it , and cruised letting bikes go by when I saw them . Of course
there were side bags on my bike .

It no longer matters how fast I once was .

It's only recently that CA passed 21658.1 VC. For decades, lane splitting was legal because there wasn't a law saying it was illegal. But the point at which a police officer write you a ticket for reckless driving varied depending on the officer, so this new vehicle code section allows the CHP to publish guidelines which make it black and white in terms of what's legal and what's not.

Now it's ok to split when surrounding traffic is going up to 45 mph, but the motorcycle can't be going more than 15 mph faster than the surrounding traffic.

Lane splitting is one of those things where you get the test before you have a chance to study. I luckily survived my first few years of doing it when I was young and now have 28 years under my belt which helps a lot.

Still dangerous as heck though, no matter how long you've been doing it or how good you are.

I lived in Puerto Rico until my 20's in the mid 80's, we split lanes on a 2 direction mountain roads at night in the rain as fast a we could go NP, the rest of the time we drove anywhere our bike would fit or go, sidewalks, wrong direction, etc. especially if 5 O was chasing us some guys fell, some got caught, some where lucky like me, best thing I did was leave PR, way too crazy there

We where young and dumb, but having fun
