    Pontiac?

It has been so long since I spent any time here on the board that I don't remember.......other than GTO girl....is anyone here in to Pontiacs?
My first ride home from the hospital was in my Mom's 68 firebird.....and since then I have always gravitated towards Ponchos.
    This is my current project.

    Nice.
Only Pontiac I had was a gutless 77 Firebird w/305 automatic. My sister had a '75 Catalina with a 455. You could seat 6 ZRX riders comfortably in that car.
Go for a ride. Take it easy.

Similar platform as the Monte. Though the GP is stretched a little.....and the dashboard is way different.

I raced one of those Gran Prix's with my 72 Monte. He had the 400 in the Pontiac...I had a slightly built 350. It was a scratch race. Always loved that body style of those GPs.

    Love your 71 GP!

    My poncho: 69 Firebird convertible.

Pump gas 540 BBC, street car that runs 10.70 at 8000ft DA and doesn't mind 100+ mile street outings. Yep, fun car...

    Re: Pontiac?

1st Pontiac was a 1979 T/A with a little known option - the ratchet shifter , it was like the Hurst his n hers shifter but there were NOT separate gates - but from 1st you had to slide the shifter to the right and press the top button to get into 2nd , then again to third, then it would not let you shift into neutral or worse reverse when it was held to the right - it would only go from 1st, press, 2nd, press 3rd, then it was done no oops! allowed - cool option but it was a 79'' = 403ci..which until a few yrs ago the 403 was engine non-grata , it kills me to see people pay top $ for 403's after being the odd engine out for so long

    2nd - 78 T/A 403 with edelbrock kit & T-tops, w/ B&M shifter

3rd - 78 Formula with a balanced and blue'd 355' marine crank - ti valves, mild cams with 650 double pumper- 425hp /475tq - I didn't like the wood grain dash vs. polished aluminum t/a dash but it was a former show car 10/10 that when I got it it was mechanically 10/10 but interior and paint had some blemishes - I figured 8/10 - but I got it for 6500 , sold it for 8500 a yr and a 1/2 later and today it would be 20 plus ! but those cars were made with cheap stuff

Anyone that can keep a trans am 2nd gen from disintegrating due to rust must live in a desert - any moisture those things , from my experience , rust out faster than any other anything with an engine and wheels - to me they were made to be disposable

Pontiac did have some cool things like, shaker hood, posi-traction, T-Tops, ratchet shifters and swivel bucket seats - oh I also liked the T/A polished aluminum dash, that was cool looking to me

    Re: Pontiac?

I got my brother's 68 Firebird with a 400 when he was stationed in Korea in 70. Great engine, but there was so little weight in the rear that when I'd go over a hill at 80mph, it would lift off the ground. I wanted to hang a surfboard out the rear windows to see if it would fly.

    Got about 11 mpg

Grew up riding around in moms 72 Bonneville, became a first gen chevyII nut, then jumped on board the fiero bandwagon. Here is my current Indian. PO mocked it up as a 63 Nascar I am slowly taking toward a nhra stocker SD replica.

My baby was a 69 GTO convertible. Had to sell it during hard financial times. About killed me - I sat on the front porch and cried as it drove off. It was a sad day when gm shuttered Pontiac. Baffled me that they kept Buick and killed Pontiac.

    Re: Pontiac?

    Had a few Pontiac's!

64 and a 66 GTO... the 66 had tri-power. My 64 was just a 325HP but I could run with most of tri-power GTO's and other muscle cars because most if the nuts that owed them didn't know how to drive... not bragging just stating the way it was.

I never had anything but a 440 dual quad hemi out run me top end. The 64 was the only GTO that came with a close ratio 4 speed... it had a 308 rear ratio and 4th gear was like an overdrive. I'd shifted in the 4th. just at the end of a 1/4 mile. It would run the speedo back up to 20 MPH. I have no idea how fast that really was but you were hauling the mail.

Remember I lived in FL so we did a lot of running top end.

I also had a 72 Firebird... earlier emissions car, real piece of $h_t!

I forgot my last Pontiac... 2006 GTO automatic! It was totally and rebuilt before I purchased it in Feb of 08 and only had 15K.
Just sold it last Aug had 82K miles... ran pretty good real sleeper car because most people did know about it's 400HP until you smoked them LOL!

This is a 79 ta that I had when I lived in Puerto Rico 1989.
It was a beater but no rust and the t tops were awesome to have down there....luckily it was always parked in a car port so it stayed dry when it rained...lol

I just got caught in a time warped black hole. I clicked on the fiero thread and read through the entire thing and then in ended in 2018. It took me a minute to find the gate and climb back through!

My Parents almost bought a Fiero back in the day but were afraid from the fire stories. I went with them and test drove it and remembering liking it a lot at the time and wanted them to buy it regardless of the threat of fire just so I could drive it sometimes. I figured it work as good as roofies for a date. Chicks would get in and immediately be under my spell. Never got to test that theory so it was back into the '73 Hornet for me.

I have worked on and enjoyed DRIVING a few Fiero's over the years. They are definitely fun to drive.....BUT it is the only car I have ever sworn not to ride in as a passenger. It was 1989 and I was 20 years old. I rode in a GT with a lunatic behind the wheel. It is the most I have ever feared for my life.....but the speakers in the seats were cool.
