I've been going through some of my Dad's slides and scanning them to try and preserve some of the family pictures and I came across the following picture. I was 8 years old at the time and although I don't remember a lot of the event we were obviously glued to the TV like so many of us. Just watching one of the many Apollo documentaries and the flight surgeon reported the lift off heart rates of Armstrong, Collins and Aldrin were 110, 99 & 88 respectively - those were special men! There was about 400,000 people working either for or as contractors to NASA to make it happen. I don't think we will ever see that kind of effort again.

Very cool slide! I was 1 at the time but have lived on the "space coast " for 25+ years. It's really amazing to see the modern launches in person. By far the most impressive to me were the shuttles before they were retired. I was fortunate enough to live on Cocoa Beach and witness many launches of many different rockets. Hard to believe what was accomplished 50 years ago. A special group of people for sure.

My dad was one of those people Bob! I have an article from the Buffalo news listing him as a local contributor. And mentioning me being at boy scout camp and being so proud. I loved those moon shots!

I was 20, and it seemed for a moment in time, that a lot of folks in the nation were pulling together in spirit, to do something creative and bold. It was a big adventure, with big risk, and we watched it at home.

They had to load extra fuel in the rocket to hoist their balls off the launch pad.

It's great going through slides. I watched the landing with Pop and we went outside and sat on the steps looking skyward for a long time, nice memories.

    Hope you are doing well.

Holy crap. ^^^ From you? Mr. "Church Perfect?"

Back on subject. I remember being huddled around the family eating room table (not the formal dining & living room) with the RCA on and the black and white video beaming into our house in Bellevue Washington. My father in a hardened focused stare. He had seen World War II up close and this was a whole different level of wonderment.

On the multitude of trips I do up & down Interstate 65 near the Tennessee state line I get to see the Alabama Welcome center (south bound) (physical close proximity to Huntsville) and the huge Saturn 1B that stands there right next to the interstate. Not the push that got us to the moon on this particular voyage. But part of America's collective "push." Great times.

I've watched hundreds of lunches. I remember the Apollo mission. I was at elementary school when the rocket burned down on the pad and recall the sorrow in the teacher's face. I watched a satellite be aborted and blew up like humongous firework at night. I was working on the cape when the shuttle blew up. I saw smoldering parts come back to earth. I was there when the recovered parts were brought back to the cape, and when 7 hearses returned with the remains of the astronauts. It's normal stuff for a central Floridian and I assume I take it for granted. I should count myself lucky.

So many good stories & pictures.

I was 14 at the time and remember it well.....I was scared!
There was folks at a local church that believed at the moment Armstrong stepped on the moon it would turn to blood and the end of the world would begin.
I sure was relieved since I had just gotten my motorcycle license 5 days earlier.

Something Pappy gave me, the low voltage light, that indicated the initial contact of the LEM to the Moon surface.

They made nightlights for a the main players in the program.

It was hot as balls Saturday night but worth the 4hr round trip in DC traffic to watch the 17 min show put on by the Smithsonian.

Not the special thing, something else.

    Titanium struts with Heim Joints.

As there's no part number on them, I can't confirm the location of use in the manual.

I have an idea that it was part of the thruster control in the ascent stage.

As they have no part number, I wonder if they were found defective for some reason, and that's why Pappy got them, and I have them today.

There is one being used as brake stay on a ZRX.
