Carp, can't find it, I will.

It's a piece of the sleeping net from the LEM Aquarius.

Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise had cut it from the LEM before it was jettisoned, as it had kept them alive.

A small piece, on a placard, with their three signatures, thanking the folks from Grumman, for saving their lives on the Apollo 13 mission.

    I'll find it.

    Very kool.

It truly was an amazing accomplishment, especially when you think of the technology that was available back then. The digital age didn't happen for another 15 years.

Although it's no anywhere close to the same league as most of the posts here, I have this patch that that I picked up on a visit to the NASA Cape Canaveral facility. It proudly adorns an old leather bomber jacket of mine.

My boggle, what to do with these historic items.

I'm not getting any younger, and no family to pass off to, and few would truly appreciate this stuff anyway.

Need to find an established museum who might like these.

I've donated things to smaller museums and as the love of American history wains, they have closed, and who knows what happened to the artifacts.

If I croak, NYS gets 'em, and they'll end up in a dumpster somewhere, as I doubt few in this state would appreciate the greatness of the accomplishments of our Constitutional Republic.

Thinking of the USAF Museum in Dayton.

The USAF museum seems like a great choice. Put your family name there dedicated to contribution of the exhibit and it will be enjoyed by the masses.

    Amazing stuff Don.

    Re: 50 Years Ago

    Off topic ...……

    Kinda sorta …...

    What supports my sadness.

Some years ago a friend invited me to a party in Nashville, TN.

She did PT for elderly folks.

She had told the host of the party about me, and the host was excited about my arrival.

I arrived and was ushered into a room that was a shrine, to her Husband.

Looking at the many pictures, I picked up that it was Tinian Island.

Her Husband was on the stand by crews should the Enola Gay or Bockscar fail to begin the mission.

    As we know they succeeded.

Her must prized possession was the hat he wore for the intended missions.

I was blown away, and my understanding of the mission, and what little I knew of the history made her cry.

    I didn't understand why.

That Christmas I received a package, from her, she was passing, and her children had no interest in "Dad's" stuff.

It was his flight cap with the mission pins intact.

As she did not want that to end up in a dumpster, due to lack of appreciation, she sent it to me.

Nor do I, when my time comes.

    Need to make arrangements.

    Re: 50 Years Ago

Sadly, my Pappy and I didn't get along well.

Not much I could do about it.

There were times when he tried to connect, as we shared first and last name.

I have the framed placards that Grumman gave key personnel for every Apollo Mission program.

On one of the Missions, there's a placard that has the signatures of every "Grummanite" who worked on the program attached to the LEM.

When the time came, he did not sign his full name, as our middle names were different.

I remember the day, he pulled me aside, thought I was gonna get clobbered again.

"I know I've never given you a square deal, and I need to work on that, but know I do care."

"I had a choice, and against my Bosses advice, I signed OUR NAME, so both our names would be on the Moon, forever."

We connected after he became ill, and I cared for him until he passed.

That's when we got to know each other.

Pappy worked on a lot of airframes, nothing as exotic as Kelly Johnson's birds.
    OV-1s
    E-2s
    A-6's
    S-2s
    F-14s

I do remember a Grumman Day, it had to be shortly after my Father was put on the LEM program, it was the only one I ever remember going to.

I remember my Father taking the family over to an E-2C Hawkeye, a series of maintenance stands had been set up to the top of the radome.

My Mother and Sister did not want to climb the stands, and Pappy was seriously pissed.

I wasn't crazy about the idea, but knew I'd get the worst of it if I didn't.

    Pappy and I climbed up.

Three men on the radome, shaking hands.

The two older guys were stoic, offered greetings, one was impressed by the brave little kid who climbed all the way up to meet them.

The younger of the three, he joked with me, tickling me, and warning me about not falling off.

    That was Roger B. Chaffee.

The stoic ones Edward H. White II, Virgil I. and “Gus” Grissom.

When the accident happened, I couldn't understand.

Now, after many years of working with LABO and LOX, I have an understanding.

To put some of this "history of flight" into perspective; I remember reading some time ago of a retiring Air Force General, who stated "I knew Orville Wright, and I know Neil Armstrong".
