2019 AOPA Fly In & STOL demonstration - Livermore, CA

My airport was transformed this weekend into the Mecca of the alphabet soup aviation's organization known as the AOPA (Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association).

I've been to a few of these in the past, and they are snoozers but the recent surge of backcountry STOL flying thrust into the mainstream has changed this event and they had a STOL Corral with some of the most currently well known names in STOL in attendance with their nice rigs.

They also put on a STOL demo which was fun to watch.

This is great timing, because a stock engined Cessna 170 (like mine) with big tires and a flat prop, flown by "CC" Pocock from AZ, flew all the way up to Valdez, Alaska last month and cleaned the floor with the Alaskan 170 Mafia and snatched the STOL competition championship away.

The 170 Mafia looks down on the lower 48ers and have won for the past 3 years. To have CC fly up from AZ in a ratty O-300 powered bird and smoke them, is a BIG deal!!

CC was at the event and I got video of him at the demo too.

Here he is showing his fancy tailwheel setup off.

He bought the plane for $20k when it was a 12 year ramp mummy and then stripped as much out as he could, put a flat prop, big tires/wheels, and the double spring and damper tailwheel on.

The rebound dampening can be cranked way up to completely change the way it cushions the airframe on when it's landed slowly & tail first.

Of course the other big name there was Mike Patey and his Draco, which is all the rage these days. It's a Wilga that ended up looking like it took more steroids than Arnold Schwarzenegger. Over $1M easily in that thing, and it was cool.

It started out like one of these:

The round engine and little tires were yanked off, then the airframe totally modded to the max and you get this

4K fpm climb with 680 HP

Wing control surfaces have all been extended.

The prop can go into beta, which is reverse pitch and not only stop the plane on landing, but even let it back up in reverse, so he added a huge LED back up light with camera.

And night vision for forward view

    It's a neat bird

Cory Robin was there with his Carbon Cub. This plane will be rebuilt as a multi engine soon. He has a surprise in store for the STOL community.

My friend Brit hopping on his tire for a photo

I could jabber on forever, but I'll shut up and just post all the pics.

*ok, maybe one more...this a a Just Aircraft "Highlander" which is powered by a Yamaha engine with a centrifugal clutch attached to the prop. When he is at idle or engine stopped, the prop freewheels. That's why it's tied down below. When he's taxiing our, if he goes to idle the prop starts moving really slow and almost stops. It's weird!

Pretty original except for the door panels.

My daughter and I bought some nice seat stops for my 170B from Nicole at Aerostop Aviation who is located real close by in Placerville, CA.

These old screw type seat stops have been in my plane for 25 years.

I also got suckered in to buying one of these tool mats

At the end of the event, there wasn't a single plane that made me ready to kick my 170B out of the hangar for.

That Navion brings back memories. My family took a trip in a super Navion from Fort Worth to Santa Cruz in 1961, I was 7.

    Damn nice airplane.

This is gonna be fun when it launches.

In contrast to the Red Bull air races, would the winner be the one who lands last?

Cool stuff. Mike Patey is probably the only guy who sleeps less than you....

CC has a cool 170. I just recently saw some vid on it. Very very cool..

Is that guy going to build something like the double ender??

The Highlander is built not too far from me near Clemson SC. My dad thought he wanted one of those and was looking at them all over the country. I said to him "I don't think we will fit in it." He kept looking. Decided to drive to the plant with a list of questions. My first was "Will we fit in it?". Dad showed me no love and proceeded to walk/talk with the shop manager for over an hour. I finally just climbed into one and my head immediately hit either the spar or a fuel line or something (Can't remember prezactly) and I thought to myself "huh, I don't fit in it." He never got in one. Proceeded to finally get a guy to give him a demo flight in one. Guess what.............

They are pretty cool though. The factory "runway" is short. I think 300 feet. Impressive they fly in/out of there on a regular basis. Cost more than our Husky though....

Cory didn't let on exactly what he has planned but I can't imagine it will be anything we haven't seen before.

Damn. I missed that yellow 180. Flippin nice.

Have a bud who appears to be selling his Bonanza. Not sure what he wants to replace it with but his current hot button is a 180 so it would be cool to have one next door to ride in every now and then.

A quick 4 minutes on the man behind the Draco. "It was a 5 month build."

Looks like Reno. Not the first or last to crash there. At least he didn't die like some of the others.
