2019 Iron Butt Rally: you too can come along.

The 2019 Iron Butt Rally is about to set sail.

Long time Iron Butt Rally participant (his IB membership number is 10) and good friend from here in lil ole Birmingham, Alabama, John Harrison, will be providing daily written updates on the rally. His writing ("scribe") style and sense is easy to follow and understand. With a bit of wise azz thrown in.

You too can come along by reading John's updates. Bookmark this page. And there's other links on there. Including a bunch of photos already as these incredible long distance riders are already loading into Greenville, South Carolina for the pending launch.

    Enjoy.

John Harrison's latest update has been posted to the link I've provided above. Good behind-the-scenes info on getting people ready for this rally.

And in reading the update I believe that I now remember one crucial detail of this 11 day, 11,000 mile (minimum) rally ride: the riders DO NOT KNOW the required check in points around the country. Until Monday morning when the clock starts and it is GO TIME. Dear goodness.

Peak in. Take a read. You won't be disappointed.

O.K. Kids. It's about GO TIME.

I've posted the link here of John's final countdown report, or, report "-1."

Of interest to you will be that in this report John has a matrix with all the "checked in" riders and the bikes they're riding on. With your coffee this morning take a gander at what people believe will get them some 11,000+ miles and a successful circumnavigation of this here continental United States. And the riders country of origin. Australia >>>> you're well represented in the 2019 Ironbutt Rally!!!!

    http://ibr.wvi.com/ibr/2019/2019IBR_...ne16_Day-1.pdf

And for sh!ts and giggles you can reconnect with Robert Frost's poem: The Road Not Taken.

Oh. And be sure and look at what entrant #63 is riding.

I'm gonna keep banging on you kids to get interested.

Here's a link to the Spotwalla feed. This is live satellite tracking that keeps up with each bike. They left Greenville, SC this morning. And they are on the boogie.

Re: 2019 Iron Butt Rally: you too can come along.

The event has gotten a bit difficult to follow, each morning the contestants learn that days destination and arrival window as well as the many "extra point" locations for that day. The daily destinations are easy for these riders, its the extra points gained each day by going significantly off route that are the difference at the end of the rally. The riders have to calculate points gained vs necessary time to make the location, and still make the days destination on time. Not too early, not too late, in the time window given. Example - todays ride may have been from Greenville to San Antonio with extra points given for Charleston/Daytona/Key West, more points for the more out of the way.

I will save you the link-and-search-and-click.

Here is a link to the Day #1 write up from John Harrison. One advance tidbit: one entrant went for bonus points by going down The Tail Of The Dragon. And...YUP...one of the 318 curves on The Gap got him/them and down they went. Read it all here >>>>> http://ibr.wvi.com/ibr/2019/2019IBR_...une17_Day1.pdf

And if you are the curious type the Spotwalla is showing one rider now in Denver Colorado at the 22 hour mark.

I saw a couple of two- ups. Which pic is the GT 750 Joe? I thought it was the one on the right here until I looked at the front fender

I couldn't ID it either. We'll need a better 1974 GT 750 person to help us.

    Who can help us?

GT750 AKA- the “Water Buffalo” yes?

First Japanese, mass production motorcycle to be water cooled

Reason I know about is because I used to look at old motorcycles on eBay and that one looks pretty unique. The above says “2- stroke”??? Is that correct

I cannot correlate the Spotwalla rider/bike number with the rider/bike roster. That may be either on purpose or an inherent limit of the system. Nonetheless.......these riders left Greenville South Carolina yesterday morning at 10:00am eastern. As I type this Spotwalla #150 is through Las Vegas and has turned north.

The day 2 Scribe update is now available. I will save you the hunt-peck-search-sniff and provide the link below.

    * fate often waits for no one. How tough must it be to prep for this level of a ride and not make it two days?
    * the 1974 Water Buffalo is shown in a close up photo
    * and a couple of shots of one rider who is running a wicked cool forward looking infrared system that feeds a 10" screen on his dash "cluster."

Re: 2019 Iron Butt Rally: you too can come along.

Day 3 report is out. And an interesting, though long, read. Heartbreak continues. Along with deer strikes. Dead deer launch ramps for 800 lb bikes. Dead batteries, toasted ECM's in otherwise rock solid big Japanese bikes and driving snow at 14,000 feet elevation.

It's all here in John's write up.

If you're not on the Spotwalla satellite tracking following these nutz then know that a bunch of them got to the greater Seattle, Western Washington area yesterday afternoon. Recall they left South Carolina mid morning Monday.

Wonder how many use some sort of seat cushion type thing like the BeadRider, AirHawk, or just use the stock seat?

Here's a quicky linky-poo to the Spotwalla satellite tracking. Looks like a bunch are up on top of Hurricane Ridge in the Washington State Olympic Mountains. Note: you can really zoom in on Spotwalla with perfect resolution and see the really small details of where they are.

Here is a linky-poo to what John is calling Day 5 update. They're all out in the deep southeastern corner (desert part of Washington) of Washington State.

This update report has our first "status table" where the riders are reported in order of points they have acquired to date. But there is also the miles traveled and you get the bike make & model. Some will be sad to see that the 1974 GT750 Water Buffalo had to withdraw and is statused as DNF.

North to Alaska and a bit of Iron Butt Rally history.

The 2nd checkpoint has been waived. It appears huge bonus points for touching Anchorage Alaska. Read about it in the Day 5 Part II ride report I have linked for you here >>> http://ibr.wvi.com/ibr/2019/2019IBR_...e21_Day5_2.pdf

It has been, now, 7 of the 11 days of the Iron Butt Rally. Today begins day 8.

Most of the kids have reconvened in Kennewick, Washington (SE part of the state. Desert) and are now beginning what we might call the home stretch: fanning back out across continental United States.

Except. Except. Except......some increasingly NUTZO long distance riders who are still way up there. You know....up there. Alaska. And northern Canada. Take a look. Remember, come this Thursday, day 11, they have to be in Greenville, South Carolina and hit a narrow arrival time window at the check in location.

    Nutz. Just nutz.
