    Elevation and carbs. Blackhills trip

Me and the Hooligans are going to the Black Hills next week. I'm the only carbureted bike. Should I have any tuning or concerns?

If the jetting is right, ride it.

I run between Death Valley and Wolf Creek Pass at 11,500 feet and don't change anything.

I live around 1400 feet above seal level, and Lead, one of the higher communities in the Hills, is right around a mile. I have not noticed much if any change in performance at that level. You should be fine.

This is a good time to be riding out there. If you go through Cheyenne Crossing at the upper end of Spearfish Canyon, you will be close to my friend's log cabin on Hanna Creek Road where we stay during the Sturgis Rally. He is right at the end of the pavement, so many of the bikes we watch go up the road turn around and head down the way they came. Sleepy little community of Rochford is the same way--one paved road in (from Lead) and two roads out that turn to gravel just around the corner.

Keep an eye peeled for deer and bighorn sheep. They like to hang out along the road. Elk should not be a problem unless you rent 4-wheelers and tour the back country.

    Enjoy!

    Some of the rest of it is;

If your jetting and such is correct at home, the bike will tolerate some extra richness at altitude for a while. If it is more rich than it should be at home, it may be very unhappy at altitude.

"The instructions said to use these jets." It takes more than that.

If your bike is jetted right at home, where ever the hell that is, taking a trip to the mountains you’ll be fine.

Now, changing the jetting each time you vary the altitude by 500 feet would be ideal, but a ride to Wolf Creek Pass would require pulling the carbs twenty times....each way.

Most gas stations have a premium option, but what passes for regular gas in that part of the world is often 85 octane that comes in from the west. It may be OK in cars, but best avoided by motorcycles.

Deadwood is 4,500’, highest point in the Black hills is just over 7,200’. Mine are tuned at 7,200’, I go as low as 5,280’ (Denver area) and have ridden to the top of Pikes Peak at 14,115’. IMO, you could go in on the fuel screws if you are going to ride a week at elevation, as an easily done/undone adjustment. Otherwise like guys have said, ride it and you will be fine if it is right to begin with.

My stock jetted ZRX (silver '04) lives at sea level and ran fine over Beartooth Pass (10,947 feet). Probably a little down on power but it ran fine. You should be OK.

Here in N. AZ. our elevation is approx. 5K feet or more. Back in 2006, I moved to Grants Pass, OR. Elevation there was less than 100' above sea level if I recall correctly.

I was there for almost 4 yrs. My ZRX ran fine and I didn't mess with any jetting changes. I moved back to AZ. in 2010 and my ZRX still ran fine.

I've ridden it at elevations above 8K feet and no problems.

I'd worry more about stupid tourists and local wildlife critters than jetting. I just came through there a couple of days ago and between idiots and construction, such as chip sealing both ends of The Needles Highway, it wasn't what I was hoping for. Having said that, I'm sure you'll have a great time. A lot of good roads and things to see. Have fun and stay safe. Sadsak

They do try to tune up the roads ahead of the Sturgis event. Safetravels doesn't show major work https://www.safetravelusa.com/sd/ but SDDOT map may help you check on individual projects and timetable. http://www.sddot.com/travelers/docs/ConstructionMap.pdf

I’m used to carbureted two stroke MX bikes that will barely run at elevation when jetted for sea level. I’ve had no such issues with my ZRX. Rode it to the mountains once and was shocked that it ran perfect the whole time.

If you ever ride in northern Arizona, you go from 1200 feet in Phoenix to way over 8000 feet in a day.

I toured for decades on carbureted bikes of one sort or another -- Yamaha triples, FJ1200, Kaw Voyager XII, etc. -- and rode Pikes Peak, Mount Evans, Leadville, yada, yada. They were down on power at elevation, but so are my FI bikes.

    Enjoy the trip.

I should start a new thread with ride reports.
