A little insight into the "quoting issue"

Anyone posting on this board long enough has either seen his own posts disappear when they try preview it, or ran into inability to quote someone.

I'm pretty sure I figured what's going on. It's the result of the page being unable to process (or more likely rejecting per security specs) certain characters.

    for example:

    Name: temp.jpg
Views: 172
Size: 266.0 KB

Above you can see the difference between the apostrophes' in the posts. Arash's is leaning forward, what's known as a "smart quote" while BASpro uses plain vertical apostrophe.

To us they seem almost the same, but for the computer the first is a special character containing all sorts of formatting data, which make it suspect as malware. The latter on the other hand is a simple ascii character the computer knows to be safe.

The fix is to change your input app/system to not use "smart quotes"

As for cleaning up content you're posting:

Copied articles often contain formatting information and other special character that get rejected by the post editor.

You'll need to copy the content and paste it first into a plain text editor (like notepad). That will omit all the bad stuff.

Then select again all the content in the plain text editor, and copy it again.

When you paste the recopied content into your post, it should make for a board friendly post.

    Interesting

Let's see if this failure can be replicated by others using your root cause described above.

Arash, post something with an apostrophe so we can test the theory.

Ok, here’s one with an apostrophe posted with Tapatalk on my iPhone for someone to try and quote.

    It should fail...

Can anyone quote the post above?

Is this one with another apostrophe?

The apostrophe might be the culprit like Ben’s post outlines.

Easy..... this can be quoted. Now replace the apostrophe in Let's with this one - ’ - and try it again.

Also see how you can't quote this one now that I pasted it above.

Works on Tapatalk, but that’s moot. I see the special color added to the apostrophe in yours. I’ll go try it on a desktop next.

    Go here: https://www.nousphere.net/cleanspecial.php

Paste the failing text into the box, click submit and copy the cleansed version below it.

If somebody can NEVER be quoted, they probably need to cleanse their signature.

Notepad for PC probably works too

Here's an app that work (as would any other editor for programmers), and is available across platforms:

Brackets was made with web developers in mind. Consequently, there are versions of Brackets for Linux, Windows and Mac. Don’t be deceived by the simple UI; Brackets supports dozens of keyboard shortcuts in addition to advanced features like split-screen editing. With the Live Preview feature, you can watch your web pages update in real time as you edit CSS and HTML files. Plugins provide additional support for things like W3C validation and Python tools.

Re: A little insight into the "quoting issue"

This reminds me of the days when I had to work documents with Word Perfect that allowed hidden text code to be revealed to work with easier. Microsoft Word won’t let the “smart text” be revealed and it can be a real pain at times.....much like what you found here, Ben.

Good catch! That now explains why copying someone’s text and pasting into a manually inserted quote function works.
