Going to Florida for the First Time

Going to be heading to Palm Beach for a Security Seminar thing June 3, 4 and 5, never been the last time I was at a coast was when I was about 4 in Cali. I am not sure if I will have time to do anything but hopefully I will get a chance to check out the beach. Honestly, although I have not been around the ocean since being 4 yrs old the ocean scares the crap out of me.

If we were designed to be in the water we would have gills right?!?

Depending on where you are, plan for an afternoon thunderstorm, just passing through.

It's not bad, if you expect it and have a plan.

My son and I were at Disney World eating out doors. I felt a gust blow through and looked around. That's called "The first gust" and precedes the thunderstorm. I saw it coming, so we picked up our food and went inside where the place was nearly empty. In a few minutes, Boom! and pouring rain. People picked up their food and ran indoors where there was not enough tables.

Next day at lunch, another gust, and my boy's head pops up and looks around to find it. Same thing. We were indoors when it hit.

    Now that's a solid tip

The I-4 corridor is called Lightning Alley. We had a bad one this evening about 7 pm....right in the middle of a 5k race. Nothing makes you run faster than massive cloud to ground lightning.

    Lightning in Florida is epic

Some night I am just going to put the DSLR on the tripod with the shutter open and see what I get.

It has been hotter than HELL over in my area ( Fort Myers) ... I am down next week to close on the new house and move out of the other one.

Assume it is going to downpour at any point in the afternoon, around 4:00 is normal in my area... and I mean build an Ark downpour.

You won't be spending much time outside.... you won't want to

Window rattling thunder. Sideways rain. Wind. Sometimes hail, water spouts and tornados. Wind is a given. The cloud fronts are beautiful, scary and awesome though...unless your on a boat.

My son's friend got blown off his CBR300 at speed when a front caught him.

They have a python rodeo every year and now there's even a show on Discovery channel about some guy's personal vendetta on the snake. The state used to pay for everyone caught but not sure if they still do.

Read this in the local paper.
It's been years ago, when I lived in Orange Park, a local telephone repair guy was returning to his truck. As he approached the rear he saw the truck bouncing up and down. He eased around the side of it, to see a tail and then the whole 10 footer.
It had it's jaws attatched to the front bumper and it was violently shaking the truck.
It was early May, mating season. The horny lizards are just out wandering around, looking for love..

Is your confernce in WPB proper? Where are you staying? I live about 35m north but could provide you w/some good eatin'/sigtseein' places, if'n you'd be innerested. My daughter & I just rode the beach today on the FJR- water was flat, clear, gorgeous and warm. We saw a pod of dolphins swimming right off shore but no sharks.

There are some very nice, ahem, adult entertainment establishments in the area too, if you go for that sort of thing.
