Re: Motorcyclist mag shuts the doors

I gave up on MC'sit years back when Brian Catterson (after Mitch Boehm left) took it over and turned it into an unreadable rag.

And now that virtually all the major moto-mags fall under the ownership of one company, there's just a lot of repetition out there. To that point, I'm also done w/Cycle World too, also owned by the company that owns MC'ist. Ever since Peter Egan 'retired,' I've really lost interest in the mag. Seems like half the magazine is now written by Kein Cameron, who I like, but the mag has picked up this coffee table style, big hard, glossy cover, large pages. They just lost me on this transition. It's no longer bathroom material and trying to be far more esoteric than a moto mag should be.

Once that subscription runs out, I'll be down to one monthly mag, Rider, which has remained true to its core mission. Back in the day, I use to get 5-6 mags a month on subscription but no more. Every now & then I'll pick up a copy of Road Runner, another former subscription, but it's not often.

Blue Ride Motorcycling magazine is another I'll pick up at the store as it only comes out quarterly but it's filled w/the local touch, surrounding NC/SC/TN/VA & GA primarily. Just don't expect great writing, tech articles or product reviews. It's mostly about roads, restaurants and towns you'll visit in those areas.

Used to get 4 mags a month. Now I'm down to Rider and MCN (no ads). A buddy gets Brit mags and they are much better

I use to love MCN but it got to the point that the content became dry, dull, and boring to me. Has it gotten any brighter over the years?

Compared to the European motorcycle mags the American mags have been pretty lame for years. I've kept my subscriptions because they are so cheap and they have an interesting article occasionally. Not like the European mags that I pay $60 - $80 bucks a year for and read pretty much cover to cover. Guys like Gresh and Lewis were actually the most interesting part for quite some time.

8 or so years ago he was interested in buying my 1980 GS1000S Wes Cooley replica. He dropped off the earth without us reaching a deal (I wasn't really looking to sell) but I had his phone number. I can probably find it if you want to call him and ask him Joe Gresh.

Mitch came & went. He ran a vintage bike mag for a bit, then he supplied articles for a number of mags, but I don't know if he ever resurfaced beyond that.

Once they went leftist, I was done with them, I bought the magazine to read about motorcycles, not their perceptions on Gorebull Swarming.

I sent them a note when I decided not to renew, and gave them my reasons.

I did buy the recent Cycle World with the ZRX article.

I only get three mags by subscription now, and I wonder how much longer they have as well.

Cycle world and motorcyclist went to the new format and I was not going to renew. It was clear they were stretching a little into a long ways.

Rider has had it on those mags for years, IMO. The more or less traditional format has nothing wrong with it.

Yep. I've read Rider magazine for years and will continue to do so as long as they retain the focus on rides, riding, rally's, gear, training, sharing experiences, etc. In short- the experience. I have a large stack set aside for the ride ideas they presented.

I just let my subscription to CW lapse but if Motorcyclist is gone in print I may have to renew Cycle World. They both went kinda upscale and, I felt, were redundant. But I do want to get at least one mag that keeps up on developments.

If Motorcyclist is gone it's just another sign of the death of print media. Unfortunately for me as I like to read a hard copy and keep issues with articles on bikes like the ZRX. Also, Motorcyclist had an article on the Ducati Monster and I have one so that was cool. Both keepers.

What will I do with all the boxes of old bike mags in the garage? Hopefully, read them again someday when I retire. At least the highlights.
