Thanks for all the warm welcomes! Good to be back.

Thought I'd post a couple more pics... these aren't meant to be pretty, just to document the "before" state of the project.
You'll see here the Supertrapp full system, the block-off plate, radiator kit, sliders... I hadn't done a jet kit, but the original owner did, and had it way too rich.
I'm in the process of putting the ZX11D rear wheel back on, after having the original wheel back on (cause it had good rubber).

Hoping to see some of you guys on the road soon enough (after a carb rebuild, etc.). We got more snow & sleet this weekend; who'd a thunk it?

Re: Iím back... first time here in maybe 15 years - still need to work on my ZRX

Found my #3 carb was broken today, which might well explain why it was running badly before its long hibernation. A corner of the carb body was broken off under the cap. KWICK is fixing me up with a used carb body, thankfully, but Iím also getting some 40s to try.
Thought seriously about trying my VM33 smoothies on it, but then Iíd just need to replace them on my GS1100ES donor.

Good news is that the carbs were way cleaner than I expected, just one pilot clogged, and mixture screw settings all over the map.

Anxious to stop wrenching and start riding, now that weíve actually had a few nice days.

Thanks to KWICK my carbs are running very nicely, as far as I can tell while running on the race stand anyway... thanks, Pete.

Still finishing up cleaning my tank, and might be looking good for getting the new rubber dirty this week. Swapped to a ZX11D rear wheel in the process, although my only new tire was a 170, which fits it fine. I'm not sure where and when I collected all the spare wheels... my mind is going.

    Got all the fluids flushed.

Just got a battery with the terminals on the wrong sides, so need to get another one, since the battery cables won't reach.

I'll adjust the throttle cables and get the pods back on tonight.

    The anticipation is palpable.

Re: Iím back... first time here in maybe 15 years - still need to work on my ZRX

So... after weeks of working on my ZRX1100, I finally got her out for a little test ride. It went quite well, aside from a little popping on deceleration.

And then... I was turning it around in a tight space in the garage (standing on the kickstand side) and I dropped it over. Can't believe it. I know better. I even once (long ago) worked at a motorcycle shop, and moved them around daily.
Broke a signal lens and the front brake lever.

I've got replacements on the way, but after all that work and anticipation I can't stand waiting a few more days.

    Grrrr.

I discovered that my boysí GW250 brake lever works, borrowed it and managed to get a spirited ride in this afternoon - finally! Had to re-bleed the rear brakes, but I donít use them that much, anyway.

Rex is running strong... better midrange and top end, but getting some popping from the pilot circuits (Iím guessing) so I may play with the mixture screws tomorrow. Iíll also check the temps of my cylinders tomorrow to see if any is running leaner/hotter. I havenít even synchronized the carbs yet, but Iím impressed. Also havenít checked valves recently, but will soon. Also need to look at the plugs.

My twin, 20-year-old, boys took it out for their first liter bike ride today (so far, the biggest has been my old KZ750 Twin) and they were grinning ear-to-ear upon their returns, and want more.

    Happy Camper here.

We (my boys and I) managed to get three bikes on the road at once, and rode through Clinton, NY to Waterville, where we had a great lunch at Roc Star, then found some minor twisties on hwy 315.

I managed to miss a deer that jumped out in front of me, and a tourist in a car in the middle of the road stopping to see the river right at my favorite ď25 MPHĒ turns.

First time we got three bikes out together. Lots of fun.

Re: Iím back... first time here in maybe 15 years - still need to work on my ZRX

I had plenty of twists and turns since the last post here - Just as I was setting up to do a sync, the stock carbs, which had just been rebuilt, got partially gunked up again (see "white silt" thread), and one was flooding, and they generally ran lean and popped at low speed / idle.

Since then, I've swapped the carbs to the CVK40 rack that KWICK had reworked, I"ve installed ZX11 cams, a +4 advancer, got the valves adjusted (a few were way tight) and a few other miscellaneous things. It is up and running on the stand, but I'm waiting for the Bill Hirsch tank coating to dry... it's been hot and humid here, and I suspect that it slowed down the curing process (even though I know that heat speeds up chemical processes?)...

Anyway, I'm now literally waiting for paint to dry.

I'm anxious to see what difference in power there is, and where it is in the RPM range. I've installed Connie 14 velocity stacks, adapted with Pete's pod adapters... I'd call these a medium length stack, at about 65mm, or just over 2.5".
I'll use the RAMAIR foam dual filters over the stacks.

I'll be back in the saddle again, soon.

    Cheers,
    ff

I make the same mistake all the time, but the town we went to was Waterville, not Watertown. Watertown is near Fort Drum, and the Canada border. Good salmon fishing there. Waterville is a much smaller town only 15 minutes from here, where I go regularly for medical appointments.
Not a lot there, other than a Stewart's gas station that sometimes grills outdoors, a tremendous restaurant called Michael's, the Roc Star ice cream place, and it was the home of George Eastman, founder of Kodak, who moved his whole family house from Waterville to the grounds of his mansion in Rochester. For some reason, there was a spat between folks in Waterville and the Eastmans, and to this day they don't even acknowledge he was from there with any sort of plaque or anything.

Re: Iím back... first time here in maybe 15 years - still need to work on my ZRX

I thought I had the bike running, but it turned out that the carb holders / manifolds / boots that I bought from eBay were not working out. The carbs were literally falling out on test rides. There are steep ramps inside the boots that the carbs just won't get past. Maybe with a press.

I'm going back to the originally supplied old ZX11 ones, and they work out far better - the carbs now fit all the way in. Now I'm waiting on new O-Rings for those, but it is basically running OK without them (until it doesn't).

Now I need to install my new brake lines (Galfer), and once I get the O-rings, it's back to riding.

The bike is running strong now.

After putting the original (old) ZX11 carb boots on, the carbs are staying put (unlike with the eBay specials) and all is good. I love the CVK40 carbs, and the ZX11 cams together.
I still don't have the right choke cable on there, but getting around it. I'll order the right one soon.

Yes, the snow gets serious here. I moved here from San Diego 13 years ago, and didn't even stop to think that I couldn't ride all year. I also didn't realize that buying a house with a steep driveway was an issue :-)

Now that I'm retired, I'm actively looking for a new state to live in. Snow aside, the taxes and laws here are just nuts.

I lived in the Sacramento area when I was Jr. HS aged, and I've worked for 3 different Silicon Valley companies (from San Diego), which had me in the Bay Area once a month or so for years.

We mainly left the Left Coast due to the declining schools - we had twin boys entering school, and not all students spoke English, among other problems. My 1.7 mile commute to work was an hour each way (better on the bike).

Also, our last neighborhood (in Escondido) kept having fires get very close - most of the neighbors homes burned down after we left.

Had a huge fire wipe out complete neighborhoods over here just last year. I was able to see flames from my back porch. The neighborhood of Coffey Park was completely leveled. I had 22 co-workers lose EVERYTHING.

Yes, it was painfully slow - most of the time was spent in 1/2 mile backed up traffic to get on the ramp to I-15-S, then stop & go, then more stop & go to the office after the exit. I understand they have widened the roads and it is significantly better.
I miss the ability to "lane-share" in California - not allowed here in NY. I often commuted by bike to an office in LA, and it would have been crazy without being able to go through stopped traffic (although I did witness one young man kill himself doing that at high speeds).

I generally didn't see angry motorists in cages trying to intentionally move over, open doors, etc., but once on my morning commute, only a few blocks from the office, I had a guy in a new 7-series BMW pull over to the right curb in front of me, forcing me to completely stop. No idea why.
He was lucky I wasn't one of the armed Harley riders. While most folks there know that it is legal, many apparently see it as unethical, or something. Or just anger from being stuck in traffic, when you aren't. Most drivers in California are a bit more bike-aware than in many other states; they just see it more.
