    AV80Rís 1980 Ford Pinto

The traffic around here is terrible, so I decided to give the Pinto an Italian tune up late at night when the roads are clear.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_tuneup

I went to a Chevron and poured an entire container of Techron that treats up to 20 gallons (Pinto fuel capacity is 14 gallons) in the almost empty tank.

Then I drove all the way out to Martinez and turned around before the toll plaza at the bridge that heads into Benicia for a total of 70 miles.

    I learned a few things.

    1. The overboosted steering and brakes are heaven on the freeway! Itís like the controls were designed by an anesthesiologist

    2. The chassis feels pretty darn good at speed and the car is very comfortable. The simplicity of the cabin is refreshing. Having the analog FM radio playing combined with the smell inherent to all cars of this era that have survived to this day is a bit of a time machine.

    3. The speedometer will not go past 85 mph, no matter how fast you go.

    4. 96 mph (gps) on flat ground in a Pinto feels like 150 mph.

Now that the car has tags and hasnít let me down, I think itís wise to invest in a few things:

    - New 185/70-13 tires for the existing 13Ē steel wheels with wire hubcaps or maybe some 1980-1990 Mustang 4 lug alloy wheels with fatter tires. Iím torn on what to do here. The stance with the stock steel wheels and wire wheel hub caps has a certain look to it that is kinda endearing. Itís a stock Pinto for goodness sakes, no meaty wheel/tire combo is going to fool anyone. It might just make sense to embrace the stock setup and enjoy it for what it is. :

    - The windshield has some major scratches on the exterior in the view of the driver. Instead of replacing the windshield, thereís a glass scratch repair place in Hayward. I might cruise by there and see what they think. The DIY scratch removal kits donít have good reviews. Itís dangerous at night because it refracts the light too much and makes it hard to see.

    - The right side door isnít sealing well to the body even though I installed a brand new door seal. Iíll have to do some research on how to fix this and what options I have.

    - I think the pipe from the smog (air) pump to the catalytic converter is leaking. This may explain some of the excessive NOx (nitric oxide) if the cat isnít getting hot enough to be effective (thatís the purpose of the smog pump).

    - Oil and filter will be changed tomorrow, but I also need to flush and refill the brake/clutch hydraulic fluid, engine coolant, and power steering fluid. I should also probably change the transmission and rear axle fluid too.

    - The left steering rack boot needs a clamp to be secured on the rack again. Itís not torn so this should be an easy fix with the right clamp.

    - Iím considering tinting all the windows aft of the doors, but again Iím undecided on this as Iím not sure the aesthetics will be pleasing.

Straying from stock is going to be very hard for me on this nearly 40 year old car.

It got parked on its 8th birthday and is back in action on its 39th! Itís been waiting a long time to fall into my hands

I was 4 years old when it was sold new and 12 years old when it was taken off the road. Thatís kinda neat!

I completely forgot to include the AC in my plan above KWICK, thanks for the reminder! Iíll try and see if the system isnít contaminated or leaking and will definitely be sticking with R12 and not converting to the R134a which doesnít blow as cold in my experience.

Brian, those P1800ís are great cars. I canít even remember the last time I saw one on the road here. Theyíre very rare!

I know Tim....,manual gearbox is my preferred choice too..

But its the little period details I love ...and remind me of when I was riding around with my dad ...like those little 'hinged' quarter~ vent windows on the front doors (there was a little lever you moved to open and lock them shut..).....and the way you have to depress the button on the chrome door handles to open the doors etc..
Really cool and really takes me back..

I miss those vent windows a lot too. They went away on our American cars starting in the late 1960s. It's a shame because they worked so well. The only car I owned that had them was my first, a 1966 Mustang, but I remember as a kid riding in many cars that had them.

TG/Brian, my 1986 Vanagon has those ďwing windowsĒ and they are absolutely wonderful!

Brian, the touring version of that Volvo is sublime. Iím always interested in 2 door wagons or ďshooting brakesĒ. Iíve been intrigued by the BMW 2002 tii touring version my entire life. They are as rare as hens teeth though.

    Looking good!

The shocks and suspension are made for the weight of the wheels and tires you have, and wider wheels and tires will affect the way it goes straight. Sometimes it's hard to get them to stop "hunting" when you go to wider tires.

The van was changed over to 134 by a guy that went out of business. Had to do it over as he took every short cut. It's cold now.

Living in Arizona, we have learned that a converted to 134 A/C will never be cold enough when the temp goes over 100ļ-105ļ...the evaporator is not big enough. You can dick around with the fill and get it "ok" but it will never be R12 cold.

I've always wondered how well a current 134 system would cool if you converted it TO R12. I'll try it someday.

I tried an Italian Tuneup on my Pinto wagon on I-4 in Orlando....something let go in the motor and I left it where it stopped. What pissed me off the most was that I just filled it up.

Ref the old Volvo's....we used to call them "Fish Am's"...a play off the Trans Am name.

For some reason the flywheel kept coming off the converter. Can't tell you how many times I had to crawl under that thing on the side of the road and bolt it back on. Even lock washers wouldn't work. Never tried locktite though. Anyway...a big bang and loads of smoke and I knew it was toast and not worth towing and fixing. Either the belt broke and it sucked some valves or it threw a rod. Either way, it became the city's problem LOL.

That time I did. About 9 months prior when the flywheel came off for like the 10th time I left it but didn't pull the tag. Got notified a week later they were gonna tow it and charge me. Crawled under tat pig one last time to get it off the road and a couple weeks later the motor blew. Didn't leave the tags on it that time. Lesson learned even though they can run the vin and still locate the owner. Never heard another word.
