    Re: AV80Rís Vanagon thread

Theyíre back ordered until 5/3, but Iíll order two new heads for $1160: https://www.gowesty.com/product/cyli...-cylinder-head

Plus this $65 gasket kit: https://www.gowesty.com/product/bund...ead-gasket-set

And have it all installed by my local VW mechanic/guru/expert.

Pulling the intake, exhaust, water hoses, rockers, pushrods, and heads to change the seals and put it all back together will take him 8-10 hours at $140.

It would take me 20+ hours and I donít have a lift so itís a major PITA.

Taking the heads off can be tricky because they want to take the barrels off with them. You have to pry and wiggle a bunch to separate them. If you screw up and pull the barrels off too far, the rings pop out and you get awarded a lot more work.

About $1300 in parts + about $1400 in labor...$2700 will buy me another 50k miles until I can build up my spare engine for next time.

He wonít be able to touch it until the middle of May so I guess I better get the Pinto running so I have a car.

You know youíre stupid when you Pinto saves your butt after your old VW breaks!

I'm surprised that they don't just pull the engine to do that much work. I know they would on an air cooled engine. The water cooled engine R&R must be much more complicated. The way you run that thing all over the state, that 50K might not take that long to accumulate.

Pulling the engine is pretty labor intensive on the WBX. So many hoses...

If I pull the engine, itís going to get a full rebuild. The in situ repair on the heads has happened 3 times already on this van, so this will be the last one before I rebuild this engine and get it ready to swap the next time my water jacket seals act up.

Mine is a 2WD, but my brother has a Flash Silver 1987 Syncro 4WD. His is pretty trick, Iíll dig up a pic.

The Syncro is worth a lot more money but I have no use for the extra set of CV joints and viscous coupling that is super maintenance intensive even if you never go off road.

Itís almost guaranteed that the source of the leaking is not just a bad seal, but pitted metal where it mates.

You can machine the heads once to remove some light pitting, but then youíre stuck with old valves, seats and guides.

The last time these leaked, the heads were machined so that wonít be an option this time.

$1400 in labor would go down the drain pretty fast if you put fresh seals on some subpar sealing surfaces.

Arash has altered my view of the stereo-typical VW bus owner, but to me, this guy is the type who buys these things.

He comes out of the closet in this video, but I think he may have been out for some time.

I do agree that all the thoughtful built-ins are pretty cool.
