At 65-70 mph it gets 20 mpg.

At 85 it gets 15-16 mpg.

Around town it gets 18 if you drive like an old man and 15-16 if you donít.

15.9 gallon fuel tank with a 240-320 mile range.

No idea. Gas is cheap, so I donít really worry much about fuel efficiency. My airplane and both my cars get about the same MPG.

Just found this online. I was going to guess $7 a gallon for Europe which would have been high, but close enough based on this chart.

In California, our fuel is considerably higher than the rest of the USA. Around $3.70-$4.00

100 octane leaded aviation fuel is about $5.00 a gallon.

Bottom line, you donít buy a 4000 lb brick shaped vehicle equipped with a 95 HP engine that has its design origins in the 1930ís for fuel efficiency!

The front end of this van is akin to pushing a 4x8 sheet of plywood face on through the air at freeway speeds.

But the utility and flexibility of the cab forward design is wonderful and easily makes it worthwhile (at least for me).

Tell me about it. I'm a pick-up guy but over here it's IMPOSSIBLE to have one.
A new Ranger double-cab costs >Ä100k because of the tax on it, plus it will cost you around Ä225 per month on road tax.

    Re: AV80Rís Vanagon thread

Time for a top end overhaul.

The water boxer engine was a technological anomaly for VW in 1983. Everything was going I4 FWD but the guy running the show at VW at the time went for the oddball choice of retaining the air cooled boxer engine and modifying it to become water cooled. I am quite thankful they did! They also did it 15 years before Porsche.

So the issue...they took an air cooled engine, took away the cooling fins, and built a water jacket around the cylinders to contain the coolant. This resulted in an ďopen moatĒ on the deck of the cylinders that is sealed with a little thin rubber seal.

The cylinder head tops it off like a lid to keep the coolant inside. This could work well except that the whole thing is turned on itís side!

Corrosion from not enough coolant changes can accelerate it, but eventually it leaks no matter what every 30-50k miles.

Iíve made it 55k miles since the last head reseal effort on my engine. I was driving last night and my back window was wet. I pulled over and a small coolant seep at the water jacket seal that has been there for about 10k miles was leaking badly.

Iíll have the heads, pistons, and cylinders pulled, and then install new heads, seals, rings, and maybe pistons and cylinders. Might just rering the existing slugs and hone the barrels.

Here are some photos illustrating the WBX design.

And an article that explains it far better than me: https://www.gowesty.com/tech-article-details.php?id=39
