    2003 "REX" ZRX1200 - NEW TO ZRXOA

    Greetings ZRXOA board!!
I am new to the message boards here but I have been a longtime fan of Kawasaki and the mighty ZRX!!

I was recently gifted a 2003 ZRX1200 (green) (blk/slvr) by a good friend and longtime board member here, Ken or as many of you on here may know him; "Bikenut". Ken is an amazing person and wonderful ambassador for the ZRXOA message board and anything else that is "REX" related.

For the past 9 years or so that Bikenut and I have known each other, I have worked in a motorcycle dealership and owned the same 2002 YAMAHA YZF-R1 that I have always kept in immaculate shape... And although it has gone through several different "stages" of tune over the years, it has always been as good as it could possibly be at the time. Bikenut has owned several bikes over the years and has always been the same way with all of his motorcycles - especially the REX. His stable was getting full and although he wasn't desperate to get rid of the ZRX, he wanted to be sure that the same level of meticulous attention would continue in his former bike with the next owner. Aware that I was a huge fan of the ZRX, but couldn't afford to buy it, Bikenut was very gracious to gift the bike to me, knowing that it would be fully appreciated and loved and that I would embrace the ZRX "lifestyle" as well as all of the resources that reside within this forum.

My introduction into this forum by Bikenut has been just as much of a shock and privilege to me as the inheritance of the bike itself!! With my '02 Yammy R1 and my 1989 Chevy Camaro RS (305c.i. TBI) (for all you 3rd Gen fans!! ) I am no stranger to well organized online forums, but the friendship and camaraderie that Bikenut has exposed me to within this forum is sensational! I am shocked by the level of expertise we have on hand here and the willingness everyone seems to have to help each other and offer helpful advice! It's also neat to hear about the real world functions like rides and get-togethers you all organize - even after all of these years!

I also can't tell you how lucky we all are as a community to still have guys like KWICK (for example) who fabricates custom parts to improve our bikes and has the hands on experience to tell us what works and what doesn't without us having to find out the hard way!! (Speaking of which, I will be getting with you soon to get some of your custom ZRX stuff so please dont go anywhere Mr. Kwick!!) Guys like this have done EVERYTHING with these bikes and know them inside and out!!

I love to watch the builds you guys get into with the great details that some have put forth into what I would consider absolute works of art for finished motorcycles...I have heard it said several times on here during my binges of page reading and research within this forum, that the ZRX is "an empty canvas for tuners"... I couldn't agree more!! The only limit would be your budget!!! For that reason, I will be focusing on some pretty mild upgrades on my ZRX and won’t be straying too far from stock. Bikenut has already suspended the bike well with Bitubo 3-ways out back and race-tec gold valves up front among several other very desirable mods like stainless brake lines and upgraded calipers... I'm going to be adding a very nice full Ti exhaust system (one place I never mind spending a little bit of $$ on), pod filters, jet kit, larger battery box from Kwick, sidecover brackets from Kwick, starter/alternator chain adjuster upgrade, AIS block-offs, AIS plugs from Kwick, and fender eliminator kit. I'm also going to put alot of attention on going through all of the fluids and checking/adjusting the valve clearances while it’s torn down for the carb job and exhaust install just to be sure that everything on the bike is back to zero. I will be installing the AIS mods at the same time as well... I will try to keep everyone here posted and I’ll let you all know of any issues I come across along the way and how I deal with them. In the meantime, I know these motorcycle things pretty well, so if anyone has any questions, feel free to pick my brain!! I'm looking forward to meeting you all!!

Re: 2003 "REX" ZRX1200 - NEW TO ZRXOA

Damn, Maron, you embarrass me, even if it is all true

Maron does not just "work" at the largest MC dealership in town, he's the head tech and also a certified auto mech, but most of all, he's just a really nice "kid" (33), with a lovely wife and a 10 year old son.

I know he already loves his new REX and can give it the attention that it needs. Not quite a BG Wells tidy-up, but all the essentials and some performance mods as well.

As for me, I never thought I could find a bike that I preferred over the ZRX, but since I got the Z900RS a year ago, I just wasn't riding it as much and with the V1K (my winter bike) also sitting in the garage, I just don't need 3 bikes. That doesn't mean that I won't be here anymore. I don't do Facebook, I communicate with my friends on this board.

Thanks! We can do that! I went to school in Gainesville and most of our rides ended up in Ocala! I miss riding down there! Some great roads in those parts!!

    Count me in.

Dennis and the doctor can trailer their bikes to my house and we can go from there. I know how they hate that boring I-95.

welcome welcome! the nicer of my zrx collection is a 2003 Blue. they are fantastic bikes! a leftover zrx1200 caught my eye back in 2006 . out odmf the many bikes at the dealership, it called out to me. at the time, i was addicted to my large displacement motor ZL900 Eliminatpr. i knew when i saw it, that the ZRX would be my next streetbike. sure enough, the very next year i ridded myself of the Eliminator and i have owned ZRXes ever since

Welcome to the madness. Nice to see a Rex go to a loving home. Good that some younger riders are keeping the ZRX bikes going. My youngest son 20 next month is getting his first ZRX an 05 in decent shape for graduation gift from College soon. He has been riding it on his own this spring already and hope you enjoy yours like he does his. Congrats and have fun.

What a great starting place to be, all you need to do is keep it clean and ride it - or you could just throw wads of cash at it like the rest of us.

R1 is a stunner too, I had 2000 and 2008 and I reckon I preferred the 2000 purely due to the tail.

Like Bikenut, I also have a RS and V1000 and can understand his statements but even as nice as the RS is I gotta keep my Rexes.
I'd say you're blessed to have a friend like him.
