Re: 1999 ACA 7ECA Citabria “Hamachi”

Front floorboard, boot cowl, headliner, windshield, and all windows except the right rear removed today.

    Front floor area

    Right side

    Left side

    Behind the instrument panel

    Front pedals

    Main gear attach

    Backside of headliner

I don’t think we are going to reuse or reinstall wood floorboards. They make some out of carbon fiber which will be way lighter, and instead of installing carpet, we’ll have some polished aluminum kick plates where your heels rest.

    Carpet goes in the trash.

The inside of the boot cowl was covered in crumbly foam stuck on with adhesive. The metal will be totally cleaned and then etch primed.

The fuselage has a bunch of drain holes. But they weren’t effective enough for the neglect this plane got as a rental all its life.

Nearest the tail moving forward in the following pics

This was a flying aircraft just last week!

Thanks for following along and more to follow soon.

I’ve taxied aircraft without cowlings and the controllers always comment...I’d love to see what they say if I pulled up to the line with a bare fuselage without wings!

DO IT!!!!! To bad the wings aren't stripped also. Ask for taxi instructions to the nearest runway and have a heli ready with a LONG line to help you take off.

Re: 1999 ACA 7ECA Citabria “Hamachi”

Removed the aft wood floor boards and the last of the fabric on the bottom of the fuselage.

Then we towed it to the wash rack and gave it a good bath.

A couple aviatrix friends stopped by and checked out the project.

Then we towed it out into the sun to dry off. It was a warm winter day here. Maybe 70/72F in the sun.

Once it was nice and dry, back into the hangar it went. We put some padding on the top of the vertical stab and let the tail raise up to the ceiling. This makes it much more comfortable to work on the fuselage.

The engine and firewall forward area cleaned up really well. The ugly and beat up baffling needs to go...

It’s already starting to look a lot better just with all the dirt washed off.

The lower wooden stringers all stained and gross from dirt and water.

A couple wooden formers completely broken at the bottom attach points.

The next step is to remove all the wood. We’ll do it as a one piece cocoon (excluding the bottom stringers).

This is not only a nice reference during reassembly of the new wood, but it also looks pretty cool hanging from the ceiling of the hangar once the project is done.

Today we worked on removing the last of the wood stringers on the bottom of the fuselage and started removing the control cables and rudder pedals and linkages.

Re: 1999 ACA 7ECA Citabria “Hamachi”

Removed the tailwheel and leaf springs, and started addressing the issues on the fuselage steel tubing.

Starting from the back, working our way forward using maroon scotchbrite to knock off any surface rust and inspecting every inch of every weld and tube.

Tube on the left is done, right one is what we start with before some elbow grease.

After a little careful work, the gross stuff comes off and you have nice metal.

Bushings in the hinges for the tail feathers need special attention.

This is tedious work, but makes all the difference for a nice result at the end.

Re: 1999 ACA 7ECA Citabria “Hamachi”

That looks like a new pulley. Bushed, or ball bearing?

I hope you don't run out of elbow grease.

Re: 1999 ACA 7ECA Citabria “Hamachi”

Original pulley from when it was built new in 1999. I didn’t notice if there was a bearing or bushing, but they rolled freely...I’d guess there’s a bearing there!

That’s the nice thing about this plane. Even though it’s skunky, it’s only 20 years old and the yuck accumulated from the 7000+ hours it’s flown in the uncaring hands of renters.

When you open something up that hasn’t been touched since the 40’s, it can be really ugly. We’ve been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

Still, it’s amazing how much a brand new airplane can age in only 2 decades.

Pretty interesting thread you have going. Now quit messing around and get a youtube channel going on the restoration. Have a pretty girl in a bikini stand in front of the plane for a clickbait photo and see if you can make some money.

Not much to report since we are at the stage where the sexy fun stuff with big visual progress is over and now have a lot of the tedious detail work ahead before we can get to more fun stuff.

Working from the tail forward, every tube/hardware attach point/hinge/etc. is cleaned, inspected, and then etch primed. We have a long, long ways to go.

Juggling a few projects at the same time doesn’t help, but we just try to get at least one thing done everyday. That means the plane will eventually be finished, right?

Does the Citrabria have a pre sewn bag available, or do you have to recover it the "old" traditional way?

You are doing the fun stuff..... Like any project 99% of the stuff you do never gets seen but is 100% necessary. Everybody only gets to enjoy 1% of what you do. Wish I could be there to help!
