    220/221...whatever it takes

ďJATO (acronym for jet-assisted take-off), is a type of assisted take-off for helping overloaded aircraft into the air by providing additional thrust in the form of small rockets.

The term JATO is used interchangeably with the (more specific) term RATO, for rocket-assisted take-off (or, in RAF parlance, RATOG, for rocket-assisted take-off gear).Ē

Iím just a hair splitter by nature.

JATO was used on B52s with the Hound Dog misslle. These were cruise missles with an air breathing jet engine. The hound dogs could be fired up on the ground and used as 2 additional jet engines to augment the 8 engines BUFF. You could then re fill the hound dogs fuel tanks airborne. Jato was also used on the B36, which used the outboard twin jet engine pod usually only for take off. But could be used in cruise.

Regardless, augmented take off power is pretty cool. Kicking in water injection AND throttling up the hound dogs at about 50 knots must have been a big kick. Full burner take off in an F16 is similarly grin inspiring.

Yeah, Fat Albert, the support aircraft for the Blue Angels is one of my favorite airshow performances. Never missed it at MCAS Miramar when I lived in San Diego.

I was stationed at MCAS El Toro for 5 years and thought the best part was when they got into town and left with Fat Albert.

The FWF was removed because they were going to convert it to turbine power but it was going to take too much structural modification to make it work so the guy abandoned the idea.

With Luscombes, it's not "has it been crashed?" it's how many times. I don't think that rudder and vertical stab are off the same year.

    Piper Pacer and Mooney Mite

I put my tail wheel on a car ramp in my hangar to raise the wing up a bit and my friend took the concept to another level! Electric winch and everything.

The Mooney Mite is a cute little plane and will be for sale soon.

Nice find Bill. My buddy Craig has owned the plane for decades, but now he's too large to fit inside it. The plane hasn't flown for 3 years and needs some work on the exhaust to be airworthy again.

The last time he flew it, he had expanded to the point that the cabin was so cramped that he couldn't safely reach down and operate the manual gear lever so he left the wheels down for the whole flight.

I'd love to own it and with the little Lycoming it's a darling little bird, but I think I'd get bored of it pretty quickly.
