Iíve never seen a shop clean that crud off in my experience. They just slap the new parts in and call it a day.
Yeah, you're probably right - but it would have been harder to get back on without a quick scrape. The bolt heads in behind it (not sure what they are for) were actually totally covered in crud, as in I didnt even see them until the second can of degreaser.

I still need to have another run at it all with the front sprocket off - my other bike I had to take to the mechanic to whiz off the nut with his SnapOn gun. So I decided not even to attempt this today!

Only just saw this sorry - not sure but I'll find out as I pull it all apart this weekend I guess.

I'll also be stealing all the ti and lightweight parts off the bucket to go on the nice bike too.

    Re: The stars aligned!

Well a simple Petcock install turned into a full rear end strip down, clean and rebuild. Had to replace fuel line, so needed to pull carbs (including airbox) so I pulled the rest to see how it all worked.

So anyway there is ZERO chance I am putting that PIA of an airbox back in (Brian you were right ), and will order some pods - question is though what to do in the meantime?
Put some cloth over them and use boot spring things to keep it in place?
Run them without anything and pitch a tent due to induction noises when I ride it???

    Re: The stars aligned!

Dirk......good to see you are getting some bits stripped off to gain access...(only way to be able to clean things thoroughly...

Anyway....now you have junked the stock airbox (and have the carbs out/access to them) now would be a good time to open those carbs up and check if they gave ever been jetted.?

If you are going for pods you (and an exhaust system) you are gonna need to buy a jet kit anyway....(stage 3)

And if you are gonna send to Pete for a tension tamer...then you may as well order the jet kit and pods in the same order..?

Anyway in the meantime open em up and have a look...

Oh and it would also be prudent to have the carbs cleaned while you are at it.

When all this is done and carbs are cleaned...jet kit fitted..pods fitted..exhaust system fitted..

You WILL need to have Synch the carbs........then you will be good to go as all will be Sawaeeet.!!

Check out the relevant sections of my "Makeover thread"......and all these steps are laid out to easily follow....

    Help for rookie?

Got it all back together and running, but when I rev it bogs down before revving up properly.

Is this because it's running really lean due to no filter at all? Or have I touched something else that would do this? I've got pods on the way but they won't be here till late next week.

    Re: The stars aligned!

Yeah Dirk......it will never run right with no filter/filters on the carbs.

This is why I said you need to firstly establish if the carbs have ever been jetted.... (you also need to know this as you are going to pods)....and even if you had your new pods right now and fitted them without any other changes to those carbs it still wouldn't run right..

Don't know.,but if the answer is no and it is running stock jetting.........,and you take the Airbox off completely (as in this this case) then absolutely it will bog and refuse the revs as the air/fuel mixture is all wrong.....

Even if it has been jetted....,you will need to know if it is stage 1...stage 2.5...stage 3 ...etc

And if that is the case then it will have been jetted with the stock airbox intact (and you have just removed).......once again it will never run right like that...

If you try to ride it like that .....it will be quite dangerous as there will be a "lag" when you give it the throttle (especially low speed and in traffic)....then the revs will come in and the bike will lurch unexpectedly....

First thing Dirk....check the Jetting....and go from there...

But its never gonna run right with the airbox taken off and no other changes...

Have a wee look through those thread links I posted to familiarize yourself with what you need to do

    Hope this helps my friend..?

    Brian.
