So How many of you guys run prem fuel in the connie ?

I was at my local Shell station topping of my tank with Prem 93 octain fuel, when a guy on a connie pulls up at the next pump. He waves and starts giving me a ration of crap about me being an old fart and wasting money putting Hi Test in my 2017 Connie.
I smile and told him to do as he will put me I would follow what the manual says. So my question is How many of do NOT use Prem fuel in your connie ??? Am I missing something ??
    Thanks in advance
    kindly

Was he riding a first generation Concours by chance? Factory octane recommendation for the 1st gen Concours was 87. That wouldn't explain his ignorance though with regard to factory recommendations for the new Concours, which calls for 90+ octane due to the higher compression it runs.

And no, you're not missing anything.

...I run Premium in the Clown Car.
Regular pings and the timing retards from the knock sensor and it looses about 15 hp.

Regular in my BMW (which requires premium) works great on long freeway trips. It also retards the timing when it senses any knocking, but at low throttle cruising at 75 it gets about 15% better mpg with 87 octane.

I use 89 in my Versys 1K which calls for premium and never a ping. Try a tankful of 89 and see how it works.

if a bike has a knock sensor, you won't hear but the first rattle then your timing will retard and take away power.

Re: So How many of you guys run prem fuel in the connie ?

Thanks to those who have chimed in. I am rather poor and have to pass on lots of lifes luxuries. Just the way it is. I do not have money to blow as I am on a fixed income. That said it seems silly to me to skimp on quality fuel for my Bikes. I have a 2000 ZRX 1100 and it runs fine on *& octane but I still put 89 octane in it, as I am very fond of it and what it is.
The Connie is my new baby and it deserves the best I can give it. Hell I even names my bikes and talk to them...Ö LOL !! yea I know !!!

The Connie does not have a knock sensor. I run 90 or 91 depends where I am in mine without issue. I also use mostly Top Tier gas, no grocery store or other cut rate gas as I've seen the damage caused due to cheap gas. I'm not gonna try 87 or 89 in mine as I'm pretty sure with the frame design and all the bodywork you're not going to hear it knock or ping.

I run premium. My carbs donít seem to gum up as quickly or as badly with 93. Bike seems to run better. But that is subjective feeling.

I filled it up with race gas out the Boss years ago. 110 octane leaded. The bike absolutely ran better. Power wheelies were common place where they were absent before.

    My non bikes all get or got better mpg with premium;
    96 F150 w/300 6cyl
    04 F150 w/4.6 V8 (only one left in inventory)
    13 F150 w/5.0 V8

    04 Mercedes twin turbo V12

    '83 GPz 550-- Number 4.

So besides higher octane (which actually means the fuel burns slower) premium fuel has more stuff in it, cleaners, detergents, etc.

I tun premium in my Connie, with the VVT I can imagine enough cylinder pressure to cause an issue simply based on the amout of torque it makes at 2500 RPM....

I haven't had time to put any test equipment on ot and verify anything yet...

I run premium in all my bikes, and I try to use name brand gas with a half decent detergent package... cheap gas has less additives.

fried pistons, bent rods, hammered bearings.... cost more than the extra dollar and change it costs me to fill the tank
