Super rare, souped- up Gremlin being offered-up

Rarest Gremlin in the world headed to auction http://a.msn.com/08/en-us/AAwi2u3?ocid=st

This 1974 AMC Gremlin 401-XR is coming up for auction on bringatrailer.com, and it just might be the collector car buy of the century. Hiding under its unquiet pink exterior (yes, we know its Plum Metallic) lies the soul of a beast: 401 cubic inches of the finest muscle Kenosha, Wisconsin ever had on offer.
The one being offered up is even more powerful than the Gremlin X:

AMC began offering a 304-cid V8 in the subcompact Gremlin back in 1972. Because all AMC V8s are based on the same small block introduced in 1966, Randall AMC of Mesa, Arizona quickly realized that a swap to the far more powerful 401-cid/6.6-liter unit would be simple.

Re: Super rare, souped- up Gremlin being offered-up

engine bay of the 401 XR

    from link:
For the low, low price of $2,995, buyers could have a car billed as being able to run the quarter mile in 13.9 seconds at nearly 106 mph. With all the speed parts installed, the 401-XR turned 12.4 seconds at 115, an absolutely blazing speed. For comparison, a 1970 Chevelle 454 SS with the powerful LS6 engine option, one of the most desirable muscle cars in the word, ran in the mid-thirteens, as did the famed Yenko COPO Camaro.

That's the 1968 AMX GT concept that never made it to production.

Yeah my father was also an AMC guy. we had a brand new Marlin. It was all silver, most had two tone paint. We pulled our boat with it and had zero problem with that, I did tell him when he brought home one of those hugely ugly Matadors on demo, that if he bought it I would disown him. we also had an rambler american (i think that's what it was called) it had an automatic trans with 2 shift levers on the floor what was that about? perhaps an overdrive

upon further research the twin stick trans was a 3 speed manual trans with a borg warner electric overdrive. funny i don't remember it being a manual but i was all of 6 in 64. i do remember him letting me shift it into OD. sitting in front seat no seat belt at 6-7 yo.

Guy I knew in high school had a 73 Grimly with 401 that would lift the front wheels. Wild ride to say the least.

My parents had a 70 Javelin SST with a 360 automatic. Borrowed it one Sunday and went to Beech Bend Dragway, first time I made a 1/4 mile pass, went a couple of rounds and was late for supper, oops

Looked like this including the same tires, nice car but not the best car for a family of four, the Javelin was mom's car, dad had a 70 Mach 1 with a 351 (Cleveland). After that was a Charger RT with a 440

This one does monster wheelies! Seen him in person a few times, and no, that's not a purpose built exhibition wheelie car.

I had a Gremlin X, Filled the rear bumper with redi mix
It had the 3 speed manual trans. It would pull the front wheels in SECOND
I have owned 4 Javelins ,and still have my original '71 Javelin/Amx with the 401 (on engine stand)and now building a 360. 304 is ready, but "some " is NEVER enough , lol
I flattened the headman headers numerous times on that Gremlin........ fond memories
We ran a Gremlin with a 401 at the dirt track in D'lo ,MS , years ago. They didnt know the specs to P&G the motor at the tech shed. Loved it , lol

That's mine. Bought it in 2004 and the only straight panels were the roof and passenger front fender. Got it back on the road in 2007, and loved it ever since. It's got a mildly warmed 390/auto. Ran a best of 13.57 @ 103 in the quarter with full exhaust and street tires. I could probably make the high 12s with slicks and open exhaust.

I'm working on a 67 Rambler American. When finished, it will be 390 powered with 2 throttle bodies on an old dual quad manifold. Modern overdrive 5 speed that will handle 700 HP, 4 link coil over rear suspension, coil over front with rack/pinion steering. 4 wheel power disc brakes. Lowered about 1 1/2", 17" wheels. I'm going with an "A" scheme SC/Rambler paint job (red/white/blue).

Neighbors owned the local AMC dealership
An AMX lived there all the time but there was a rebel for a while
And he brought home the S/C rambler on race nights.
You know. It was the demo car.

Had fun regularly eating a local Gremlin 390 with my 67 396 Camaro. They were pretty quick!
Silver REXs are sooo subtle - they slide right under the enemy's radar, then WHAM - they're dead!

03 REX - Akra, K&N pods, Ivan's jets, Teds Advancer, airbox out and chainguard, Chrispy's mirrors, Biscuits rearsets, Greg's brace, Armz shift linkage, Wog's seat, 'n some other stuff

    84 KZ1100R - Yosh, K&N, fork brace
    82 GPz 550 - Hindle
