Reassembled the fork legs with fresh seals and filled them up with fresh fork oil. I used 15W instead of the original 10W since the KMX community agrees that this fits the rather soft fork better. There is no budget for stronger aftermarket springs right now, maybe later.
For the time being this will have to do...

I also gave the triples some fresh flat black color. Did not take a picture though.

Installed the rear wheel bearings today. After the ordeal with the snapped circlip and the stuck bearings this was a piece of cake.
I used some good tools (for circlip installation):
    Name: IMG_2920.JPG
Views: 124
Size: 938.2 KB

and some makeshift/DIY tools (to press the bearings in):
    Name: IMG_2919.JPG
Views: 121
Size: 875.1 KB

    And sufficient grease of course.

I did the installation in our basement so the way for the bearings and the circlip from the freezer would not be too long. My wife had the perfect wheel support for the installation. She says it's supposed to be a pot for plants but I think it's actually a Kawasaki wheel stand.

So this was merely a 10 minutes job (including a short celebration of myself after installation of the first one).

With keeping the bearings nice and cold did you keep a lager or three chilled for the celebration?

To be honest, I hate Weissbier (unfiltered wheat beer). I don't particularly like beer anyway, I can drink maybe two or three but then it just tastes bitter to me. Untypical German, I know.

I'm more the cuba libre, mojito, caipirinha, gin tonic type of guy and for that it was too early in the day.

Genever and Gin are not too distant relatives.

The rear suspension spring lost its rust and got some black.

I have started to take a closer look at the engine now and the first things I found again make me wonder what moron worked on that bike.
Ok, the snapped screw on the thermostat housing will be dealt with, the second one was the totally wrong type of course.
    Name: IMG_2944.JPG
Views: 104
Size: 1.11 MB

I tested the thermostat and it opens at approx. 70 deg. C which is above spec but I think it's ok.

But when I took of the RH side KIPS cover, the KIPS lever was just loosely flying around in there. It was not even attached with its bolt.
The pic shows the correct position of that lever with the still missing bolt. I found a suitable bolt in the meantime. The lower rubber grommet that you see on the pic too is supposed to embrace the cover's edge with its groove - guess what... it wasn't fit on the cover but just sitting underneath it, sealing nothing.

Yes, it feels good to start assembling again.

I took off the head yesterday and the state of decay of the gasket tells me that it was a good idea to replace that too. A new set of gaskets is in the mail.

The combustion chamber and the piston are pitch black with residues. Since I do not have any experience with smokers - does this tell me that the engine is running too rich?

I will clean that up of course and I will take off the cylinder probably today. I hope that the piston and the cylinder look okay and will ask your opinion on this then too if you don't mind.

Two stokes always have a Coke residue left over from combustion it's normal and yours look pretty good. A little rub with steel wool and hopefully the barrel isn't scored. This bike is looking really good

Interesting question. We used to have 80s rather than 50s. Most of my buddies had MTX80 or DT80LC.
I was exotic and had a brand new Zündapp SX80. Was faster than most road 80s.

I was wondering about Carlo, since he must have been through the same era as me!
We were only allowed 50cc between 16 and 18, and after that you could go full blown capacity, so 80/125/250 were never big in ZA.
I never had one since we were not that rich... but I did use a 50cc scooter while my buddy had an OLD Suz B120 delivery bike.
Man we had the best times one those crocks.

Better too rich than too lean Heino. That way if you ride the bike when it’s cold out, your fueling is safe.

My jetting on all mine are all leaned out to the optimum mixture for best power/rpm at the coldest ambient temp I ever ride.

When it gets warmer out, they still run good but with slightly less power.

Man I was actually thinking about getting a gamma again but then I realised that it would be like me trying to ride a steel rule so I will just leave the memories there I think these are two of my favourite ones growing up I had a few of each as I either blew them up or crashed them. Both I rebored to 80cc with copper head gaskets and skimmed and ported heads with Elmar pipes went like a brick down a greased mine shaft with a tailwind

Sorry to interrupt your trip down memory lane ladies.

I was rather busy the last days and we did not achieve much on the baby Kaw. But I made a good catch on eBay classifieds.
The brake lever was broken when we bought the bike and the clutch lever had incredible vertical play. No wonder considering the oval mounting that is supposed to be round.
