Hybrid Titanium/ZX10r custom machined swing arm pivot

Before my time here Paul Kondraki did a limited run of beautiful Titanium swing arm pivots for the ZRX....unfortunately these are now no longer available..

I had been reading through an old thread recently which touched on the subject...http://www.zrxoa.org/forums/showthre...vot-pin.....it gave me a little inspiration to machine my own 'Hybrid' swing arm pivot which would involve converting/re machining a 2006 ZX10r hollow swing arm pivot spindle....,a custom machined aluminium 'collar'.....two Titanium axle nuts from 'Probolt' and a zx6r swing arm pivot insert sleeve...

I wanted to create another unique piece for my 'Makeover' 1200 ZRX that was in keeping with some other custom parts I had made for the bike....

So pull up a chair.....the show is about to begin....

Ok so here is the stock ZX10r swing arm pivot...you should be able to pick out the part number..

At one end there is a hex recess for a 14mm hex/allen socket...(incidentally there is a baseless 2nd hex recess at the base of the 14mm one ...this time a very odd size of 11.6mm..) However the main 14mm one is the only one that matters....

It's a 20mm spindle with an M20x1.5mm threaded portion at the other end .... (Not M18..!!)

The spindle is completely hollow with a 16mm bore the entire way through....and its considerably lighter than the stock (solid) ZRX one...

Here are some comparison shots alongside the stock ZRX pivot...

Here you can see the marked differences in the threaded portion of both spindles (the ZX10r donor being an M20◊1.5mm thread) and the stock ZRX having an M16◊1.5mm thread....

You will notice the ZX10R spindle is longer than the ZRX one ....and that is perfect as I want to remachine the 14mm hex end so I can thread it and have sufficient protruding out each side of the bike frame to allow me to fit a nut on each end....

The other thing to note is the stock ZRX pivot can only fit in one way (Fed in from the RHS) and retained by a larger diameter collared "nut" which locates in to the Larger opening on the LHS of the frame....

This section of the frame is recessed to a depth of just over 25mm....

During my machining of the ZX10r pivot I will have to recreate a collar to rest against the recess 'stop' illustrated.....

It is no good copying the length of the stock 'collar' section as it is just 21.75 mm and we want 25mm... (as per the measured depth)
    Name: received_10203868092338516.jpeg

Ok so lets get this ZX10R spindle in the lathe for some machining....
    Name: received_10203868082178262.jpeg
Views: 556
Size: 563.0 KB

So the entire flange section and its rear section at the 14mm hex end is reduced to 20mm consistent with the rest of the spindle....
    Name: received_10203868087578397.jpeg
Views: 543
Size: 428.6 KB

The resulting machined spindle is then temporarily fed into the frame and 'centralised' so the exact equal protrudes out each side (it will be 9mm)...

Ok so we know the depth of the recess for the collar we are going to machine is 25mm plus a calculated 9mm portion which will be protruding....

So with that measurement of a total of 34mm we make a scribe Mark on the spindle shaft... (this will be our datum mark of the end of our collar...)

    Still with me....???

Ok so I machined an M20◊1.50 pitch thread on the end of the spindle..... (note the 34mm from the end scribe 'datum' line)

Note also I did not thread up to this line...rather I stopped short of it up to a 'relief' groove... (this is so I can accurately finish "dead on" my datum via a recess which will be machined in my collar)

Threads machined... (note they are stopped short of the datum @34m and machined into a 'relief'..

    Name: received_10203868101818753.jpeg
Views: 539
Size: 246.8 KB

Note the overall diameter of the collar is much larger that required.. (this is so I can grip it tightly with mole grips and tighten it 'up to the datum' it will be reduced I due course...
If the collar stops short of the datum...remachine its recess a little deeper so it is 'dead on'......if it passes the datum the remachine its 'face' to reduce it accordingly so it is 'dead on' (this is how you can be accurate to stop at your datum and why I stopped the threads short...)
    Name: received_10203868102898780.jpeg
Views: 533
Size: 218.5 KB

With the collar firmly screwed on and finishing dead on the datum...and you are satisfied its right it is then screwed back off.,remounted in the lathe and its FRONT end reduced so the overall length of the collar measures 25mm (same as the recess to the stop).

Then it is screwed back onto the spindle shaft and firmly tightened with the mole grips up to the Datum again.....(don't worry about chewing up the circumference of the collar) its on and not coming back off again..!!

The spindle is then mounted back in the lathe and the collar reduced in diameter to 23.10mm diameter...

Right for the New spindle insert I opted to use a ZX6r insert sleeve (aluminium with steel "ferruls" at the ends) and it is much lighter than the all steel ZRX one.... (part number visible innthe photograph...)

The intention from the outset was to base this pivot around two beautiful Titanium nuts from Probolt....

I had chosen these as the main visible feature....and having an overall height of just 11.2mm they would be just perfect for the amount of threaded sections either end of my spindle that I had calculated and machined...

They are the required M20◊1.5 thread pitch and 26mm socket size... and are flanged.

As I have yet remove my swing arm to get the stock all steel insert out I cannot (yet) weigh the Stock ZRX pivot and its insert together (but I will in due course..!!)

However here is my Hybrid spindle 'and' the ZX6r insert ....and its still considerably lighter than the stock ZRX spindle on its own....

LHS (the 14mm hex recess can be utilized while tightening the nut on the RHS on account of the collar insert) then the LHS nut screwed on securely (alternatively the LHS nut screwed on securely prior to inserting the pivot from the LHS.....then the spindle held with a choice of either the 26mm socket on the LHS nut "or" a 14mm hex into the recess in the spindle end while the RHS nut is tightened via a 26mm socket on the RHS.....either Choice can be used..

Stay tuned for the comparison weigh in of the entire pivot assembly with that of the stock ZRX one Once I get the swing arm of and the insert sleeve out.

Have a very Happy Christmas Guys....

    Till next time

Just fantastic Brian. Everything makes so much sense in hindsight but hard to grasp why certain things are done while following along.

Methinks those nuts are BETTER looking than the PK axle! Also Iím certain your setup is lighter than the all titanium one.

    Bravo, thanks for sharing!

You have to plan and get clear in your head (see it in your minds eye) what you are wanting to achieve before you do anything....

Just like chess or snooker or any 'tactics' game you are always one or two moves further along 'in your mind' than the one you are currently working on....

Squuencing and forward thinking and planning play a huge part ....and as I said to Pete when he first got his new lathe "Robert Dunlop frequently said over 90% of motorcycle racing is in your head.......apply that approach and you will be on the right track"

Technique..,creativity and visualisation go hand in hand......

Yup. Can't do it without that ^^^.

Just like you can't do this too without that. Funny how cool bike builds and cool building builds are so similar.

Real light in fact .......as it is less than Half the weight of a stock ZRX pivot...

    Stock ZRX pivot is....................................... 823grams

My Hybrid Pivot is .......................................395 grams

Hybrid Pivot +ZX6R insert together is...... 604 grams

Stock ZRX pivot +insert together is ..........1321..!!

Ti swingarm bolt & nut is 429g.

Arash has a gun drilled one, I donít remember how much that dropped the weight.

I buy titanium for looks and corrosion protection. The weight thing is not on my mind after riding Calista. All our ZRXs are porkers compared to her (no matter how much titanium I install).
