    Got a new DRZ400.....

Got a brand new DRZ400 largely on the testimonials on Adv Rider.
I rode it about 60miles on the street yesterday trying to honor the less than 1/2 throttle breakin rule(500miles)
Hard to tell what that is without a tach.
So far it seems very weak. I'm hoping it wakes up once I can open it up.
Wanted something to go on modest offroad stuff out near my land in WVa.

You will love it when you crack the throttle wide open. It's a torquey beast!

I had never ridden one. Rode a KTM 500 a couple weeks ago and it was scary but I LIKED IT !!!!

Open the air box up and rejet it. Big improvement, even with the stock exhaust. And don't hesitate to gear it down a little, especially if you'll be riding off road that has some steep climbs.

Here's a quick find on the air box mod and jetting suggestions. Tons of info out there on the DRZ, as you probably are already aware.

Oh, I just remembered that your street model has a CVK carb. You'll definitely want to switch that out for the FCR that comes on the offroad model.

    CONGRATS.................

These are great Dual purpose bikes, not the fastest or lightest however, rock solid and have more than enough power for trail riding and road use.

I have the only year they made the same bike with Kawasaki badges (KLX 400) I did the 3x3 air box mod and rejet (with stock pipe) runs more than well. A few other MODS.....

Thumpertalk and advrider.com has some great info rockon

Thanks Fellas. I plan on doing the 3x3, FMF Bomb exhaust, and re-jet. Didn't know about the FCR carb.
I just thought that it would start out a little stronger.
MUST BE PATIENT !!!! get to 500 miles before opening it up.

    Re: Got a new DRZ400.....

So....can your DRZ climb the hill or do you just go look at the sign
Guy on Adv riders says his carb had "issues" when new and he had to do a bunch of adjustments.
Mine is a little hard to start and idles so low it's about to cut out even after warm-up. Mine probably need a lot of adjustment too.

WTF a new bike from a dealer with "Factory Trained" techs and it comes with "carb issues"?
I know.... the key to happiness is low expectations.

As 24 said... part of break in is run it up the RPM band just don't hold it there for long at first and then increase a little along the way as more miles are added.

You baby at break in and it will run like a baby... push on it some and run it hard some and it will run hard and fast for you later!

BTW... pretty bike enjoy and be safe!

There are a number that run over the Blue Ridge, and plenty of gravel roads to get to them. Plus the Shenendoah 500 is coming up in October.

That makes more sense. I'm going to re-build/clean the carb this wknd in the hope that it just sat at the dealers with some gas in it too long. It really should be running a lot better right out of the showroom. If that works, I'll go a little longer then do the airbox/jets/FMFBomb and start training her to run harder baby
