    Check Your Frame Rail Bolts!!

Neighbor of mine is resurrecting his 99 1100. Sat for many years. He just got his carbs cleaned and minty by that ELS guy. He re-installed them and asked for help syncing them. Used the handy dandy home made one I have, he was surprised how quick and easy it was, now purrs like a kitten.

I've been giving him the usual stuff to do, fluids, filter, brakes, tires, etc. He has my service manual, he was a helo mechanic in the Army so he's good to go. He is a member here now, OrangeParkREX or something like that.

I've heard so many times over the years for folks to check the frame rail bolts, so we did on his.

The bottom bolt of the top pair was missing. It is under the rad shroud, so not readily visible. One is on the way now!

Thanks everyone who has suggested this in the past.

    Check those bolts!!

For the life of me I cannot figure out how that bolt manages to jump ship. It is physically impossible to remove it by hand with the radiator hose and shrouds in place. It is truly the work of gremlins.

Use blue loctite when re-installing or torquing down...

Also there were two bolts in the rear that hold up the rear fender that would disappear back in the day.

Some folks have found their swingarm pivot to be under-torqued as well.

Generally worth giving the bike a once over every two years or so:

    Axles
    Caliper Mount Bolts
    Axle pinch bolts
    Triple clamp pinch bolts
    steering stem
    Engine mounts
    Swingarm pivot
    Eccentric axle adjusters
    Handlebar clamp
    master cylinders
    footpeg mounts
    kneuter valve
    blinker fluid
    etc...

The front of the service manual has a nice list of torque specs. I printed them and laminated the pages for easy reference in the garage...

I think I was missing one of these as well (or one of the bolts with the rubber grommet).

If you're talking riders right. Upper frame pair of bolts. Lower bolt of the two bolts. Then count me in that club too. I'm with Chris: how the haites does that dude back out? Just the arm torch to install anudder one would seem would leave one to believe that nothing short of 80 lb-ft of effort would unlodge that silly arse bolt. But they do. Like Steve suggested I blue'd mine before installing.

Mine was missing when I got it as well. Maybe some lazy assembly and they were just left out, haha.

Lower upper right frame bolt, mine fell out in Eureka Springs at a turn near the NAPA, right in front of Lario the Moto Guzzi rider, he reminds me occasionally.

I dare anyone to try and get that bolt pushed back into the hole with the shroud and radiator hose in place. Make that a double dog dare.

This is perhaps a reason why so many folks cut the right hand stock radiator shroud?

That's why I'm glad I ditched the shrouds and run straps to hold the rad up. Leaves the bolts in plain view.

Funny, no one notices when they are gone, yet there are guys the swear by frame "engine" braces. The aluminum frame rail does not do much.

Just did a bunch of service on my son's 41K-mile '01, and the top bolt of the upper pair was gone, and the remaining lower bolt of that pair was loose. Bottom two bolts were tight. Bought a new bolt and loc-tited/torqued them both.

I'm with Chris in not seeing how they can wiggle all the way out with the rad shroud in place, but apparently they can.
