    First failure

    Purchased a 1996 XR650L in 1995

I've been running it ever since, on and off road, with nothing but routine maintenance, and replacement of wear items.

I had some trouble with the blinkers last year, the right side was intermittent at best.

Dug into it, as doing the maintenance to get it ready for another season.

The right front directional had corrosion right into the wires, which I believe toasted the relay.

Ordered some inexpensive LED blinkers with a new LED flasher unit.

Not too shabby for a 21 year old motorcycle.

Thought about selling it a couple of years ago, and thought why, it has and continues to treat me well.

    So she keeps on THUMPING!

I was looking at buying one of these, last street version I had was an '86, red white & blue one. Then I had a dirt only in '01, damn that thing was fast.

I moved up the XL ladder to this.

Had an XL350R, a great little bike, a little heavy. Kick start only. Didn't like the highway at all. 1984 maybe?

Moved up to an XL600R, a great bike, heavy, Kick start only and if you stalled it a bear to start, and it would kick back. Better on the highway. 1987 maybe?

Picked this girl up, buddy at the dealership fell into a set of HRC XR 628 hop up kits, that and some other mods, this thing rolls. Electric start too.

I can't complain, it's done more than what I've asked from it every time.

Thought about a KLR in green for a while, this old girl is costing me next to nothing, and just keeps on going.......

So she's gonna keep on staying.

It is. How do people keep dirt bikes looking that good? Mine were always trashed after the first trip to the woods

Wow! You keep 'er lookin' great! I bought another new one in '15. Love these things. Now, I have two and an XL600R. Just bought all white plastics and tank for the newbie. It's going to look a bit like yours. Can't believe the white shrouds and tank were still available from Honda.

Pledge or Maximo's Sc-1 detail spray, work great to help bike look great when washed and to help prevent dirt from sticking as bad in the first place. From what I hear clay is a beech to clean no matter what though.

Received the new LED blinkers and LED relay.

Hooked everything up, all the blinkers flash in either right or left position of the switch ......

    ARRGGGHHHH ...... a short somewhere I suppose.

    Re: First failure

That may not be a short. Do you have one flasher dash light? If yes, what's happening is you are getting voltage bleeding through the single dash indicator. Result is all four blinkers flash.
