Infrared thermometer to check pilot screw adjustment?

Do pro technicians use these thermometers on the exhaust pipes to verify that all four cylinders have the same lean/rich mixture? A local amateur mechanic told me that he does it with success but it sounds like an old husband's tale to me. What say the Rexers who know these things???

No. Its not a precise way to tune your engine. Now if you have a bung in each header pipe and are using pyrometers that's a whole different thing.

I use it on my bike with pretty good success...No they`re not precise but better than not tuning them at all...If you start your bike and get it to temp and take your temps on the pipes in the same spot on each header pipe you can get pretty good throttle response out of it....I always tuned my drag bikes that had Lectrons on them that way....But this is just for good idle and throttle response...It`s just time consuming trying to adjust these carbs when the motor is hot especially #2 carb.,lol......JMO.....

From the factory the adjustments are not equal across the bank of carbs, off the top of my head I forget which ones are fatter than the others, but IMHO you are pretty safe just going 3 turns out from seated and then balancing the carbs with a manometer . I only use the IR when I am trying to figure out which cylinder is not right because of a clogged pilot jet.

    YMMV
