new here, 165lb rider, should i get a zrx as a second bike?

I have been lurking for a while, a few years really. I have always loved the zrx since they first came out. Presently I have a drz400sm which i love playing around on but it gets real old riding it above 75mph for extended trips.

I have been looking off and on for something affordable to use for longer rides and since the drz corners on rails but lacks power I would like something with some more power as well.

Here is the real question at 165lb is the zrx going to be too heavy? I have been riding my supermoto for over a year and dirt bike, 3 wheelers and quads my whole life. I'm sure i will show it a corner or too, but for my daily riding i plan to keep and use my drz.

the one i found is a 2001 with 48,0000 miles for 2500.00 is this an ok price? it has a touring windshield and slip on exhaust.

I have also considered an sv so I can have the wind protection but this bike seems real similiar to my drz in concept, light thin etc. I am really after something i can runwith less fatigue and I would love more power.

Two completely different bikes................... There's not many bikes out there like the REX in my opinion. It dosn't do any one thing great but it does most every thing well I.E. touring, commuting, hitting track days, & even drag racing. The motors are full of torque so you seldom bog down even in the wrong gear. They are waaaaay more comfy than that little DR your on now. Just buy one you won't regret it

& $2,500 with 40,000 plus miles is in the ball park, but I'm sure you can find one very clean with fewer miles for the same price (I recomend the 1100 any way)
I started out with nothing, and still have most of it....

To answer your "too heavy" question: heck no, you could handle it. I'm 165 and I'd be a giant Japanese man. The ZRX doesn't feel as heavy as the numbers sound, especially rolling. Plus, there are lots of ways--cheap and not so cheap--to make it lighter.

yep, it's not heavy. I'm 165 and have no problem. My wife weighs about 130 (she's probably less, but I'm guesstimating) and has never had a problem with the weight of the bike.

One thing to consider is that a bike with a little more heft doesn't get blown around so much in traffic on the highways.

I weigh 155 lbs and don't have issues with the bike's heft. Even if you do perchance let it fall over, there are ways of getting a heavy bike back up on two wheels.

I am 165 and the weight does not bother me at all. Heck the REX feels light compared to my last bike a 1985 900 ninja that if I remember correctly was about 565lbs wet.

I found my 1100 (99) in Cedar Rapids last summer. Paid 2500. Bike has 21000 miles now...19k or so when I purchased it. Came equipped with Corbin seat and Muzzy header/jet kit/pipe. I had to go through carbs, replace throttle cables and rear brakes when I got it home. Have since had Race Tech rebuild rears. Long story short? Shop around a bit...40k for 2500=meticulously maintained bike-

Give me a call at work today 561-5731. I saw that bike on craigslist and it seems like a decent deal, but we'd have to go give it a look - -Maybe this Sunday?

Im 165lbs and been riding a modded 120hp zrx for the last 8 years. Its not to heavy at all, does great in long rides if u set it up for that or banging out 1/4 mile drags all night long.
Stock Parts? What's that, some sort of soup?

Given your riding history and concerns, you may be happier with the SV.

Same story, 165 and love the rex. Other big heavy bikes from my past inlcude a couple of GS1100E's, a GS1000S and an FJ1200. I think $2500 for a 40,000 mile rex is a bit on the high side, depending on how it was maintained, operated and modded. It's a buyers market for used motorcycles now.

wow amazed to see so many Tallahassee people on here.

Hey Kenny I left you a message about 1:00 something. Thanks for the offer I appreciate it. I am seeing vastly different prices for them in our area.

Is $2500.00 a fair price? I have not seen the kick stand side of the bike no pics. It has a touring windshield so I am hoping that will make it better on the road. anythiing will be better then my supermoto which will be my daily.

Before we get too far ahead of ourselves I have to sell my kfx first. It’s also on craigslist. I have had a few bites on it. I will take less then listed for it but need to get as much as I can for the zrx. I am serious about that bike but need to raise funds first.

Re: new here, 165lb rider, should i get a zrx as a second bike?

I was stuck in meetings all afternoon. I still think we should go look at it Sunday. A bunch of us get together every Sunday morning at Catalina Cafe (used to be BadAss Cafe) across from Sam's Club and Sony's ribs on Cap Circle close to Apalachee. I show up about 7:30 am and we leave an hour later. Rexes don't come up very often around here and if the bike is in good shape, $2500 is a decent price and you can prolly talk him down a few hundred.

ill tell you one thing, they feel like they were made to 80, as opposed to feeling stressed...way different machine tho of course...the rex will become your streetbike, and the zuke an off road adventure bike...the zrx kinda feels like a dirtbike other than the rear set pegs

No you should get A ZRX as A first, main bike because you probobly won't ride the others anymore.

As everyone has said and implied. Once you go REX you don't go back. For me it has become an addiction. The bike seems to have an endless amount of mods you can do.

It's kind of funny. I used to read and obscess about all the bikes out there that I wanted. Then I bought my 2001 ZRX1200R. Now every time I think motorcycle, I picture a zrx. It's as if the only motorcycle that exist to me is the ZRX. The sound, the Power, The possibilities, and don't forget the cash you will spend on it just because it's an extremely addictive motorcycle!!

since this site is uncatagorized i cannot access it from work. our cisco ironport router blocks it for security.

Kenny i wish i could ride sunday, but sunday is a busy day for me with two young kids. I do church around 11 in the morning and with them I don't get out until about 1:30. If I can get the quad gone i will try and look at it.

I'd love it if the zrx became my only bike but a motard in the city is great. I also would not mind if I got distanzias and went adventure bike.

Re: new here, 165lb rider, should i get a zrx as a second bike?

    Conig,
I'm about your size too, and no issues with the heft of the ZRX. One thing I would say is that when I went to a Corbin seat, it dropped me down a couple inches or more, I felt much more comfortable...more like down in the center of gravity of the bike (not technically but felt that way) and not perched on top of the thing like with the stock seat. That translated to more confidence leaning over in curves, too.

FYI the stock fairing and windshield (and I use the term shield loosely) is the worst thing I have ever ridden behind in heavy rain. The water comes in two focused streams from each upper/back corner of the fairing, directly to the area under your ears...just below the full face helmet...and as a bonus the shape of the tank causes water to pool around your balls until you spread your legs away from the tank (so the water can fill your boots). Hilarious!

But seriously I do love my ZRX. I will run it until the wheels fall off, then fix it or get another. If I could only have one bike that is the one I'd keep. Good luck on your search and welcome!

you should try riding in buckets on a moto. I had a perfect mohawk 5 feet tall infront of my bike today. It was perfect to drive through on the way home.

this one has a touring screen, corbin, seat tidy tail and slip on yoshi from what i can tell. the present owner told the the screen was stock it clearly isn't from the pics.

It's not about weight, it's about the strength of your legs and your inseam measurement. I'm 5'10" and between 165--168 depending on when I last dropped a deuce. Love my ZRX. No problems with weight. Being lighter makes the bike faster and means you don't have to call KWICK too often in an effort to lighten up your bike.

Re: new here, 165lb rider, should i get a zrx as a second bike?

I'm not a big guy and I can handle the zrx okay, and I have even been able to lift it off ground without any help using my viking berserker strength. I'm a skinny 5'10 with a growing pot belly andwhile the weight really isn't an issue it IS a big bike. All the sport bike guys are in complete awe of how heavy it is by comparison, and it does carry the weight a bit high, but the feeling of mass goes away once it gets rolling. My 1982 cb900f is taller and heavier and it's no trouble to ride either. Once you're up and rolling you will appreciate the comfort that a bigger bike brings. Using an aftermarket seat (a must have mod IMO) drops your butt a little and gives you a little more security at walking speeds and the standard 7/8" handlebars fit the zrx so all comfort and ergonomic issues are fairly cheap to resolve.

The zrx is a chameleon and covers a lot of ground. They are ridden by all types of riders in all types of conditions but I have never seen a better forum or more helpful community than zrxoa.org. You also have to understand that the zrx begins it's life as an old school voluptuous beauty. If you have any doubts about pleasing a full size bike you should abandon all hope now and get a Schwinn

As for the price.... I think $2500 is too much for that mileage. Even for a single owner perfectly maintained machine it's a little bit high. There are plenty of zrx's with higher mileage but I would negotiate a lower price or seek a lower mileage bike.
