    Headed West on 5/1...

Going to Portland for my kid's college graduation. Decided to rent a big GMC Acadia (need the room for hauling people while out there), and I'm taking my wife and MIL (a young 83). First day will be about 900 mi. to a B&B in Glendive, Montana. Then on to a 50's style "motor hotel" in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho (about 700 mi.) Then on into Portland for four days. Staying downtown at the Monaco and we have about 10 relatives coming in from around the country. After the graduation we are headed to Boise, Idaho and then up across central Idaho to Stanley and the Sawtooth Range and Sun Valley for a night. Then over to Jackson, Wyoming and up through Teton Park and Yellowstone to Cody and Red Lodge. Coincidentally, Yellowstone opens the same morning (5/11) we are headed up. We will literally be one of the first cars of the season. Can't do Beartooth as it doesn't open until Memorial Day weekend. My MIL is totally psyched....she has never been out of Wisconsin. Pictures to follow...

Sounds fun, Coerd'alane lake is beautiful, I asume you are going thru Spokane and down to TriCities (my home) then to OR 84? all 4 lane. The Columbia gorge is beautiful once you hit The Dalles and Portland is awsome too, except around 5:00 To bad not more sightseeing time on the way I could suggest a whole entertainment agena for you. Have a good trip and have lots of gas money!

You got it. Have been that way before...only about 400 from Coeur d'Alene to PDX....more leisurely on the way out through the gorge and again to Boise. Hope to be in PDX early afternoon.

Had a GF in college who had a "cabin" (5 bedrooms, satellite dish, etc.) on Windy Bay of Lake Coeur D'alane. Left a lot of DNA behind in that "cabin."

Looking forward to the pics and spirited pose.

My S.I.L. took us to a breakfast buffet there that was AMAZING......I can find out the particulars if you like.....

We picked up the tab, there were 8 of us at $28 a plate.....

As u know, I'm far from rich, but I've never forgot that meal.........And I've had a few meals....LOL

ps. guess I should mention it was in Coeur d'Alene...

Sounds great. Thing is we are hitting the road super early that morning and going to this little breakfast joint called Michael D's that opens at 6:00am. We ate there last time and it was great. Also, for great Italian there is a place called Tony's on the Lake. We are having dinner there. Thanks for thinking of me.

If the motor blows, do NOT park in the dry grass along the road with oil dripping all over everything that is hot......It quickly goes downhill from there.....Don't ask me how I know this........

Hey all. Made it to Portland....great trip so far. Long haul...saw elk and mulies coming into Idaho on I-90. Also gave Log a horn blast at MM 388 in Montana. Nice house....loved the brickwork. Lucked out with weather. Today starts the first dry stretch for a week since December 6. Graduation tomorrow at 10:00am. Little tidbit....PASSED a State Trooper in Montana at 85! Came up on him fast...it was a black Impala and you can't even read trooper markings. Thought he had me...didn't do a thing. Gotta go....sure is a big country out here. Anybody ever ridden or driven from Spokane to Pasco, WA....NOTHING out there!

I try not to for that very reason. There are a few good motorcycling roads out there, but you have to cover a whole lot of nuthin' to get there.

Actually we slept in the car outside the gate. Got down to 19, but Granny had a blanket. Just got HOME! Total...4888 mi. Here's a couple of pics...more later. Fantastic trip. Lots of snow in Yellowstone. Food was great at the Bridge Creek in Red Lodge...I had those antelope medallions in front. Granny and wife at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar in Jackson Hole...just stuff.

Here's a couple of more showing the beautiful campus setting. You can see Mt. Hood in the background of the first one. The other is a part of a dance routine she choreographed the day before...she's lower left.

She did great. Lots of oooohs and aaaaahs. Yeah, we pulled out of RL on Saturday morning and drove to Mitchell, SD after stopping at Little Big Horn. Sure was sleepy there that early in the season. The Pollard was great and Granny got her own little room. They have a great breakfast there for "free" as well. Here's a couple more pics of Idaho and the Sawtooths. I probably like Ketchum, Idaho the best of the towns out there. Here's one of Stanley, Idaho pop. 63. When I lived there in 1977 it was 47. Also, the Sun Valley Lodge and downtown Ketchum early morning. I used to run the lights for the skating shows at the Lodge. They have outdoor skating all summer. Really a beautiful spot.

For sure. I'm probably going back out in late August to pick up my daughter. She's staying in PDX until then. She leaves on a bicycle trip to California in a week or so. Riding the coast all the way to LA. I doubt she'll make it that far. Little nervous to say the least. At least she's riding with two other guys....I think I'd highly discourage a solo effort.
