    85 RD350 YPVS Restoration Thread

Starting a new thread to document the restoration. It is not going to be a nut and bolt restore, just a clean up and improvement there in. Starting out with a very sound bike from mister FD

However of course as you start into it certain things start to crop up. There is some minor damage , and yes I was aware of this
    Belly Pan

    Fairing

    Tank

So anyway prepped everything for painting. I don't fool myself I let professional do this. A certain captain Krylon is going to do it for me. So everything is sanded down and squeaky clean , thanks Mister Parts Washer

All boxed up ready to go

Poor Elsie she looks so skinny without any clothes

In the meanwhile I will take a look into the power valve not working , its not seized so thats a good thing . Looks like someone has been guntering with the wiring

Also different carbs have been fitted both have individual chokes on the left, anyone got ideas what they are. I am going back to the stock carbs.

    I do have the stockers

    Ringa dinga dinga dinga ding

Also off to various suspension people with a warm credit card
THis is what I want to end up with , colour scheme from a Euro 83, which is what I had . Way less fussy then the US version

Anyway I'll post up as I progress

RD? I thought they were RZ?

Anyway, this ought to be a good thread. I've always wanted one, just never found a reasonable deal on one...

We bought one a few years ago. My kid wanted one after growing riding a 250 quad racer. liked the ring ding. It was pretty good. Need some stuff but all there. Bitch turned left in front of him and totaled it. We kept it and my buddy had a parts carcass with a good frame. Got it mostly back together but needs some stuff like gauges. Prolly be a track bike. Might not be good for that but oh well something to play with.

Well looks like I have a deadline, Last air cooled KZ I rode was a mates 750 back in Ireland, you could hear that thing coming from a mile away , sounded great. Nothing really beats the sound of the air cooled 2 valve motors . See you @ Skeenah Bri, if not before ( Barber is in April )

Re: 85 RD350 YPVS Restoration Thread

To our resident Stroker experts here's the deal. Trying to figure out why the PV wont auto cycle on key in. I eventually took the motor out of the frame and rotated it by hand. WHen I turned the ignition on it rotated, but only one way Once it reached that position if I turned off/on the ignition it did not move. No matter where the motor started from it always ends in this position, I presume thats closed if connected to the PV. So I measured the Ohmage and found the following
    Per the Manual

    I measured
    1. WR-Y-L @6.98K
    2. W/B-W/R @2.04K
    3. W/B-Y/L = 7.8K
Per the doc 3 is in spec but 1+2 ( 9.02K) while not out of spec seems way different. Am I interpreting the potentiometer incorrectly?
Would this be the cause problem I am seeing?

THe two videos below show the PV always returning from wherever it started

    Thanks

Just want to be sure before I go source another motor.

Mine didn't sequence on key on, I installed a "batpac" which eliminates a battery, sounds like servo issues.
Does the valves turn in the barrels (cylinders--US) sometimes crud off the front tyre (tire---US) gets slung up right
into the centre of the barrells and causes the powervalves to stick.

Also check cables are installed correctly and that its timed exactly perfect. (cables on powervalve)

Yeah the PV itseld rotates fine, which is a good thing. Apparently the servo for EXUP valve on R1's is identical, just scored one for $25 shipped. So gonna need a little harness splicing to make it happen. EVen if its does not , just means turn the PV to the "on" position and ride around WOT not such a bad thing

Edit- I should have reversed the wires to see if the motor goes the other way, must check that. If it does that means the Controller is fubared , but no big deal $25 bought me a motor and cables , the cables are something like$ 70 new

    Suspension

    Not to gung ho here

Yummy Racetech bits for the front end, gold valve emulators proper springs all bushings seals and dust covers , complete rebuild by them only $135 + cost of new everything , so not to bad, no chance of me fucking it up

Considering the stock springs are only .45Kg , that should considerably firm up the front end

Just picked up this (stock picture) with the appropriate bushings ( off a CBR600 ) which has been rebuilt , for $110

unlike the R6 Suspension mod this does not require mods to the frame.
Got to be an improvement over the clapped out stocker , plus it raises the rear end a bit so less chance of dragging bits

    The work continues

Cables for YPVS are marked 1 and 2 at both the left cylinder YPVS housing and at the servo motor under the fuel tank. The numbers are tough to see (at least for my old eyes!) on the servo motor. Make sure 1 goes to 1 and 2 to 2. Also, if the cables don't move freely in their sheaths, I'd recommend buying new ones. Boats.net and Economy Cycle are my go to sources for all parts. Mikes XS also has emulators for the forks that are said to work and are China made knock off of the Race Tech ones after their patent expired. Replied to your PM!

Looking good, Justin. I didn't even know this thread was here-I guess I never look in this section. Who's gonna fix the broken plastic? ALL these things need at least some repair-I've got a box full I would like to fix.

That's a good price from Racetech for the labor.

This is the last one I sold, it had lots of good stuff. I got good money and essentially a free, complete low mile RZ project. Then I bought three more in various states. I want to finish the H2 I'm working on first, then I'll get the next one going.
