    Gloves?

Hey guys, so my GF's brother is looking to get some gloves he just picked up a 600 Ninja, he is a novice rider but is looking at buying a pair of 230$ gloves....
I have never thought of spending sooo much on gloves in my life.... and personally think he is out of his mind since the gloves I ride with are pretty much just leather.... :-/

Here are the gloves he wants
Alpinestars GP Pro Leather Gauntlet Race Motorcycle glove

are the alternative gloves that are similar and much less expensive....
I looked at theses are these a good alternative.

    Thanks for the input.

When it comes to gear (and food and services and life in general) you mostly get what you pay for. Buy cheap, get cheap.

I had a pair of Held Galaxy gloves that were $230 new. Worth at least that. I sold them to a board member at some point. Guessing that member is easily as pleased with them as I was.

About six months later, I bought a pair of Dainese Full Metal Racers. They were $299 and they're what I wear to this day. Worth every penny.

Next pair will probably be Held Titans. Those retail for $349.

Excellent gloves use things other than simple leather (kangaroo leather, stingray hide, titanium, Kevlar) to enhance comfort and protection.

My guess is that the Alpinestars gloves are probably worth it. Buy the cheap ones and the Alpinestars. Have your girlfriend's brother take you for a spin in his car. With your seatbelt fastened, open the passenger door and drag your gloved hand along the pavement at about 80. Retract hand after 20 seconds. Repeat with other brand. This will provide empirical data. Recommend you start testing with the Alpinestars, doing otherwise may abrogate the need for the second test.

I think the theory is that in racing, high performance equipment is a given. We're talking about multi-million dollar entertainers out there on equally expensive R&D machines. Protecting those entertainers is likely very important to the interested party. Rest assured that the gear they're getting is likely far more advanced than much (if not all) of the over the counter equipment consumers get.

That said, they race in a controlled environment. My sense is that despite the fact that they are doing positively astonishing things, the likelihood that they will make contact with a car is fairly low. In view of the substantially higher third-party risks associated with riding on the street, it seems a reasonably good investment to buy the highest quality gear possible. If that gear is free, so be it. Chances are, it isn't. Better gear is likely more expensive.

I like my hands and fingers. I'll pay $350 to provide excellent protection. That said, I am sure there are members that have had positive experiences with less expensive gloves. Perhaps they'll chime in here.

I'm a machinist and a bass player. I'm also ok with the $200.+ Held gloves I wear because I'd be a lot less able to work and play with f'ed up hands.

I've crashed twice wearing those gloves including a 65mph high side with no damage to my hands at all. The damage to my left wrist in the '08 getoff came from the tank slapper prior to the hang time......

Also the kangaroo skin palms in my Akiras is so thin I feel that it allows me to get a little better feedback from the front end of my bike when riding at an elevated pace.
