Has anyone pit a lower temp switch in? I would like to get something a little colder to help in stop and go traffic. I already have a 160 thermo.

You have something else wrong if you think you need a lower temp Tstat and fan switch. There are guys here that live all over the southwest, including AZ that run factory cooling systems without problems.

Welcome to Wisconsin....Come smell our Dairy air !!
Yup.
And, anyone from Arizona who drives an old Chevy will tell you they run cooler with a 195º t-stat than a 160º one...the water goes thru the radiator too fast and will not dissipate the heat.
The stock cooling system works great at 120º in stop and go traffic, and also
works great at 11,500 rpm all day on the race track at 115º with a built 1109. I've done both.
That's cool. I can store that stuff, too.![]()
My only point was that the factory cooling system should be adequate under almost any conditions. I should have emphasized TGHW's point that there could be something else wrong if the OP is having heat issues.
@ andrew12159: Are you having running issues while sitting in traffic or are you trying to prevent a potential problem?
Go for a ride. Take it easy.
My all stock 2003 with 2500 miles on it runs great, like a new bike should. But here in New York, in stop and go traffic, my fan is on 60% of the time. That's been true on ALL of my bikes. It used to REALLY scare me. I'v learned to lighten up about it and trust the engineers, but that kind of abuse - stop and go traffic, idling in 100 degree heat - is murder on an engine. I think about hard wiring the fan a lot.
SQUID-TASTIC!
My fan runs and cycles in traffic all the time. If it didn't cycle and just stayed on, that would mean it was running too hot...
All my riding is weekend joy riding. I avoid stop and go traffic like the plague. Thats why it hardly ever comes on.![]()
I think we agree. I was saying that I think about modding it as part of my paranoia that I'm working on. I know better but I start to freak out when I'm sitting in trafic, idling in 90 degree heat for an hour while I fight my way out of town for a ride. There really isn't anything to be done, the fan runs ALL the time then and that's all you can do. Except move.
SQUID-TASTIC!
I am not having problems. But as one poster said sitting in mostly stopped ny traffic is more than a little concerning. My fan comes on at about 220 according to my aftermarket gauge. On my zx11 I installed a hayabusa switch and it came on a little cooler than stock and kept the temp gauge just under half instead of just over half. I know about the 160 thermo debate but it works well for me as long as I am moving.
The ZRX fan comes on at ~210-212º "radiator" temp.
That makes sense since the fan switch is mounted in the radiator. My temp gauge sending unit is mounted where the idiot light sending unit was in the thermostat housing so it makes sense to me that the gauge would read a little higher when the fan comes on. Ayone know if a zzr1200 radiator will fit? did it on my zx11 and it made a huge difference.
Anyone ever try a zx11 or zzr1200 rad?
Because I am asking about a zzr1200 radiator.
It'll be large and wide and you'll have to make brackets.
Ok thanks. I would really like to do it. I already have a zx11 rad and the height looks the same. Hard to tell with the trim on the zrx on the bike.
