    1224 upgrade questions

I'm thinking about doing a 1224 kit on my 2001 zrx. I'm trying to figure out exactly what I need & how much it would cost. I was thinking about sourcing all the parts from APE. Here's what I thought I'd need.

    1224 block exchange = $984.00
    Head gasket = $80.31
    Valve springs = $219.94
    Cam = $666.00

    Now, a few questions:

Will I have to paint the new 1224 block if I want it to be black like the stock one?

I don't have the time or tools to install myself. Approximately how much would I expect to pay in labor at a local bike shop?

How much shipping & tax for the parts?

I see 4 possible cams listed on the APE site. Which one should I choose? Or, should I get a cam from Kwick?

Are there any other parts that I need to get?

I know there's alot of other stuff I could do to the engine while it's apart. But, I'd barely have the funds for the 1224 & cam. So, that's what I'm focusing on. I appreciate anyone's time & input. Thanks.

GET A MEMBER TO DO IT, LIKE BARNYARDS CLOSE OR NINJA11ZX IN SE MI

How much shipping & tax for the parts?
NO TAX FOR OUT OF STATE PARTS, AROUND $100 FOR THE PARTS YOU MENTIONED.
I see 4 possible cams listed on the APE site. Which one should I choose? Or, should I get a cam from Kwick?
NEVER SEEN ZRX 1200 CAMS ON APE. ZZR1200 OR YOSHI (KWICK REGRINDS)
Are there any other parts that I need to get?

    BASE GASKET
    SHIMS
    VALVE COVER GASKET SET

TALK TO BARNYARD HE JUST DID A 1224, OR BEANTOWN HERE JUST ADDED ZZR1200 PISTONS AND CAMS.

FOR THE 5HP DIFFERENCE, HAVE YOU CONSIDERED STOCK BORE 12.5 PISTONS ?

Are you saying that just adding stock bore 12.5 pistons will only be 5hp less than doing a 1224 or will add 5hp to my current setup? By the way, thanks for all the answers, that helps me out a lot.

Stock bore 12.5 pistons should be within 5-10 hp of the 1224 kit.

    1224/cams - 155 -165
    stock 115 hp

Having just built a 1224 from the ground up on a extra 1200 engine. The cost are up there .

    Std bore 12.5 pistons = $ 750-800
    cams = $ 650-750
    Valve Job/mill = $ 250-300

Pay to have a good valve job and a slight mill of the head and you should be in the same ballpark HP wise as just adding a 1224 kit /cams to a stock engine.

I would run double springs, but if you keep the stock redline people have kept the stock single springs.

You could also sell the stock bore 12.5 here for around 75% of the cost if you decide to go to the 1224 later.

Wow, that's about a $1,000 less than doing the 1224. I think that certainly may be a route worth considering. Thanks.

    ask zrx kenn

he/we are doing a stock bore right now

he found a guy in fla for the pistons, say 550.00
    kwicks cams
    valve springs
    valve cover bolt washers
    spark plug well gaskets
    every thing else is
    reusable

    you reuse the head gasket
    base gasket

you need a well stock shim kit to redo the valves once cams r changed
a flex ball hone to cut glaze off bore
    thats it for stock bore

i added mo flo carbs which get you back the lost hp from not going to 1224
shop around you can find deals

I just came hear to start the same thread, it was looking at me. H/P are suppose to be @ 100 each, scerw the new block way I'd say. Unless our blocks prematurally fail due to the stress? I probally would just get a used zzr head, disasambile/reasimbile, swap it out, change the pistons, ad a set of monoflows, gaskest, and outher comsumables..??Then I'd have the 11.5 redline, yes?approx H/p?

Is that the ZZR1200 head for the ZRX1200? Curious if that is the way to go over a port/polish for the stock head.

swap springs and seats..zzr head is downdraft. gotta go zx11 ignition to get the 11.5 redline. if the APE block is bare then paint with PJ1 satin black.

The ZZR1200 head is designed for downdraft carbs. You have to swap the parts over to a ZRX1200 head.

further more.... why mill a perfectly good head?

For a good mating surface. Cometic makes many sizes of base gaskets and .010" off the head is typical with a port.

Like TEDDY always says, check the piston to head clearance before running any zrx engine with aftermarket pistons
