Movers hauling a huge piece of equipment to the Exxon Mobil refinery in Billings reached their destination Wednesday night after being on the road for nearly two months.

The last few miles of the journey from Tulsa, Okla., through Billings to the oil refinery in Lockwood were accomplished at night to reduce traffic problems.

The oversize load left Tulsa, where the cylindrical vessel was manufactured, on Oct. 18, said Greg Brooks, of Emmert International, the Oregon-based company that transported the unit and specializes in heavy hauling.

It's been slow going ever since.

Top speed for the load was about 20 mph, Brooks said. Snow, ice and poor visibility conditions delayed travel.

“It's been good all except for the weather,” he said.

The vessel was loaded onto a trailer with a “pull'' rig in front and a “push” rig in back, Brooks said. That arrangement makes it easier to move the 600,000-pound load down the road, he said.

When connected, the load measured 215 feet long, 24 feet 2 inches tall and 25 feet wide, Brooks said.

Six people, including drivers and support crew, traveled with the load. Everyone had a radio, Brooks said.
