John Deere Sabre Lawn Tractors ???

Anybody got any info on this model of JOHN DEERE LAWN TRACTOR the SABRE there is one on eBay that has my interest and I'm trying to judge if it is worth the money being asked for. The wife is having trouble with her knees and is asking about a smaller sized riding mower. I like this one as it comes with the bagger, has a new motor and otherwise looks to be in really good shape.

My old neighbor had one. He seemed to like it. I think they are made by MBT or MTB or what ever they call themselves. It's a cheap version that the big box stores get.

I'd be interested in responses, since I'm scouting out choices for next year. From what I hear from semi-pros, Cub Cadet is one of the best. Also, Toro, John Deere, Lawn Boy, and Husquvarna (sp)...

No way that sold for 3k new. Its the entry level John Deere as stated above. If it was in pristene condition it might be worth 500.00 tops.IMO.

All of those are in the same realm, if you want a good one find yourself a used Kubota, I have them come in all the time that are used way harder than a lawn mower should ever be, and there is very little that ever goes wrong with them.
I have a Husqvarna and the deck spindles are ridiculously weak and they are the same as all the other "Entry Level" mowers. In the 7 years total I have worked on Kubotas I have only replaced a handful of spindles. I have replaced 8 on my mower this year. Now I do use my mower hard and my land is not pristine, but heck I rarely get a mowing done without breaking something.

The top brands are Toro / Wheelhorse and John Deere.

John Deere is made by John Deere.

Husky, Troybilt, Cub Cadet, Craftsman and Ariens are all built by MTD.

Believe it or not Murray still makes theur own tractors.

I purchased a JD L110 five years ago and use it all seasons.

    No troubles.

The Sabers, predated the existing line, but are the same basic machines.

Thanks guys..... I've not looked at Riding Mowers in near to 20 years so I've no clue as to the quality or cost of these things. This is would be for a medium small lot (1/4 to 1/3 acre at most) and the only reason I'm even considering a rider is that my wife has to do most all of the lawn work in that I'm gone for up to 4 weeks at a time and she is having a hard time with her knees and when the heat of the summer sets in. This one caught my eye in that it has the big grass catcher which is really important to our yard and likely cost another 3 to 5 hundred. Has the Hydro Tranny which I would think would be easier for the wife to operate. That and this seems to be the smallest of the front engine riders 38" to which I think one of the smaller rear engine riders might be even better suited to the size and shape of our yard.

Nice machine there John T but if I'd wanted something that big I'd just put a Mower Deck on the Ural/Sidecar.....

If you are looking for the smaller rear engine, I have a Simplicity Coronet it is a very well built rear engine mower. The only other rear engine mower I know of that is well built is the John Deere.

    Good luck,

I can't comment on the Kubotas, but I'll take your word on it.

Do they make lawn and garden tractors?

My Kubota dealer only handles the big stuff.

My 2003 Craftsman GT5000 Garden Tractor's electric clutch gave up the ghost last weekend and I had to order parts. That's okay - I've used it hard the last 6 years all seasons. The neighbor lent me his new John Dear LT110 he bought from Lowes for about the same price I paid for my Craftsman (American Yard Products - same as Husqvarna, etc).

Being brand new, the engine cranked up very nicely and the blades engaged nicely with its electric clutch. The hydrostatic drive is very responsive and very quick in reverse (mines a little slow in reverse). But when I started mowing, everything felt weak and flimsy. I swear the deck felt like it twisted when mowing over bumpy stuff. This was a 42" twin blade deck - my GT5000 uses a heavier gauge 3 blade 48" deck and is just as happy cutting down saplings as grass.

Overall, this entry level JD is probably good for smooth manicured lawns up to an acre. Mine is a mixture of smooth and rough and is 2 acres. I prefer my old Craftsman - it just feels heavy, solid and smooth by comparison. And it burns gas a little faster since it has a 25 hp Kohler - the JD has a 18 hp B&S specially made (i.e. special parts required) for JD.

Yep they make 16 horse and up they are the T and TG series, if you are in the market and find a good buy on one they are very well built.
We do service on several that are over 15 years old and rarely is there ever anything to do other than maintenance despite the fact that most have over 1000 hours on them.

The only thing John Deere about the Sabre is the decal on the hood. That was probably sold at a Home Depot, or something similar. It was NOT made by John Deere, but JD allowed them to put their name on it for some reason, which I will never understand. Polluting the blood lines. For what it is, it is more than fine for cutting grass, but it is NOT a true John Deere. Having said that JD seems to have a name in the lawn mowing business, but I have not found them to be the best at mowing grass. I agree with whomever said $500.00 bucks for it up a ways. You get up close to a $1000.00 and you can buy a brand new one, tho a lower level mower at least it will have a warranty.

This is a John Deere, the one in the back. It's a 1959 530 gas with a roll-o-matic front end in case anyone is interested. I was driving this EXACT tractor in 1965, when I was in the second grade! The one in the front is a propane tank with wheels!

This is what you need for mowing grass around here. We have been getting so much rain I have been mowing every four days. This was in Thief River Falls, MN this summer at the Pennington County Fair, went up there for the PBR bull ride.

I think she will like that JD, easier to get onto than the front engine models.

I found my Simplicity used at a dealer here in town while looking for some parts for my push mower. The Simplicity has a roller across the back of the mower deck for anti scalping that leaves those pretty stripes in the lawn.

Only advice I have for you is lower the rpm's before engaging the mower deck, it is hard on the belt.

Mine is the slow orange but it has hydro static drive, I'm going out to use it now. I don't have a wife that cuts grass for me like some folks.
She is cleaning the bathrooms and other chores i don't want to do though.

    Good luck,

Well my wife does not have much choice in the matter as I'm simply not home for weeks at a time; so she has to mow the grass and clean the bathrooms too......
