Yup, check the tensioners for wear0thru spots also.

I checked mine at 40,000 when I had it apart, it was within spec, but in another 20k it would be worn....cam chains are really quite cheap, I put a new one in.

Oh yeah, chains wear, not stretch.

Isnt the point of lapping the valves to basically mate one valve to one port as they wear together to form a smooth seal? So what would be the point of using a sacrificial valve? Not trying to offend any one here just looking for more input.

WOO HOO! I just got off the phone with APE and they received my block. All is well they said, and they would overnight the new"ish" block and pistons and stuff (at my request). That means tomorrow evening I can begin to put the bad boy back together! Damn..I better get hot on freshening up the head.

Been there, done that. My 1224 is much smoother than the stock motor. The mirrors don't lie. Of course I have the MoFlo's on my 1224 too, and that may have something to do with the smoothness.

It's hard to beat the stock cams when the turbo goes on... better to keep the cams more mellow and force the air in!

I think it good to let these guys know there is a turbo going on this thing too. that might change peoples opinions on suggesting parts. bigger is not always better.

A turbo with stock cams and 12.5:1 compression will create a really nice matching set of ashtrays.

The Yosh grind hardweld cams won't have the lobe pitting issues that stock ZZR/ZRX cams have, and they are $725 on your cores, or someone else's cores you can get for $20-$50.00 or so.

I think that a cylinder spacer is going in as well as some adjustable cam sprockets at some time??. I think the 1224 kit is going in to give future options and getting the benifits of the forged pistons.

If you're gonna build a turbo, it's be best to buy lower compression pistons with a taller area above the top ring for longevity's sake. Cylinder spacers, unless they are made from aluminum, cause issues when they compress more than you'd like, ask Perky...

Anyway, a proper turbo piston is dished, that keeps the squish area tight like it needs to be.

Re: 1224 kit step by step install

Ok all, here is the plan. I wanted to turbo my rex because I happen to have a perfect sized turbo with intercooler. SO...In doing my research I discovered that most guy that turbo'd have burnt pistons when they used stock (unforged) pistons. Since I needed pistons, I decided to go with ape and the big bore kit since their new pistons were forged. Now....Ape recommended actuall turbo pistons if I was going to build a turbo setup. I didnt want 8/1 cp pistons as i really like the grunt that the zrx has now. So in go the high comp 12.5/1 pistons tomorrow . If I put the turbo in, I will mill a spacer to get down to 10/1 (back to stockish)and degree the cams. I have talked with a lot of people both here on the board, also at BorgWarner and also at APE. I have come to respect the opinion of many wise/experienced people. I dont smoke so I dont need 4 ashtrays.... It look as though no one has successfully installed a 1224 kit without swapping cams also. (Thanks for the info Kwick! )I am currently looking for cams but I think all in all I will have a great bike with gobs of torque with the 1224 kit "stock". Since it hasnt been done with a stock ignition and stock cams, I plan to install the pistons, tune, then dyno by next week. If I cook the new block before I get new cams......someone refer me to a good divorce lawer.

    Please keep the comments coming.

As long as you lower the CR a bit and run good fuel, you should have no problems with stock cams. I would expect to see 15 to 20 HP over stock, until the turbo is installed.

Yup, but he wasn't planning on using a spacer with the stock cams.

If he does use a spacer he'll need to degree the cams.

I ran 12.5:1 stock bore pistons with stock cams for several months. No problems. Just have to run good fuel. The chambers in our old motors are not as good as newer bikes. I've seen ZX14's run high compression on regular unleaded. We can't get away doing the same.
