    Boots--anyone have Sidi Vortice?

Time for new boots, and with a Kneedraggers birthday gift certificate, there's money to burn this time around. Protection is the main criterion, and it looks like it doesn't get much better than the Vortice, but how are they to live in? Grown up clothes only at the office, so I wouldn't be wearing them for anything but the ride and a few blocks of sidewalk, but having had my last two pair of A* boots wear out at the soles, I'm tempted to back down on the protection slightly for something with a replaceable sole, especially for that kind of money (only the part of the sole under the ball of the foot is replaceable on the Vortice).

    Thoughts/alternatives?

Sidi is not a walking boot, all though mine are the most comfortable shoes I have. Something about wearing out riding boots walking is just wrong. The Sidi is the nicest most comfortable boot ever! It is hard to belive the boot is the best protection.

Mine are last year by the way so I can only imagin how nice the "VOR-TA-SHAY" (Is that how yo say it?) is.

...or more cynically, "you may be able to find better, but you can't pay more!"

Yeah--it's wrong, but it happens. It was the toe and ball that wore out, so at least the last is replaceable.

I surrendered on the pronunciation the third time I was corrected, but that's close.

    Thanks!

My Vortice boots are comfy enough to spend a weekend walking around Laguna Seca.

Incredible boot, great protection, comfy...worth every penny!

I love sidi's, and swear by them. That being said, I only use them for track duty, as for me, the soles don't last long enough on the ball of the foot to be able to walk and ride in them. I went through my first set in 7 month's on the track, and street. Now I wear the expensive alpinestars on the street and sidi's on the track.

The Vortice's have replaceable sole inserts.

Love my Vortice boots, but soles tend to wear out quickly. I ended up wearing other boots for the streets and saving Sidi boots for the track.

Sidi has a new boot, street oriented, with a completely replaceable sole called Fusion. www.motonation.com

That being said, they are basically the older Vertebra IIs. In my crash, I broke my heal and grenaded my Vertebra IIs. They saved my foot, but now I wear the race quality Vortice boots...and they are more comfortable to walk in for days at a time than the Vertebras were.

I was rearended by a Honda Accord on the freeway...into a Crown Vic.

Anyway, my foot got whacked between the two cars, I went over the Vic and landed somehow on my heal and fractured it...it wasn't "displaced" so I just could not walk on it for 9 weeks, plus both my toe boxes were crushed. To this day, it's been three years, both my feet still are tender...buy the BEST friggin' boots you can. Street Sidis, imo, were not enough protection. The Vertigos said "new improved heal protection" and I wished, while sitting and not being able to take a piss without a urinal, I had had them.

When the Vortices came out, I had the first pair. They take a minute or three to buckle 'em up, but it's worth the effort. I feel secure knowing I'm wearing one of the best.

BTW, in my opinion, the track you can get away with less protection than the street because on the street, there are big metal things waiting to hit you that weigh a couple tons.

    Re: Boots--anyone have Sidi Vortice?

I agree, more protection on the street for sure. Every crash i've seen on the track mostly utilized the sliders on the boot, not so much the support. That being said, my street boots, while arent the sidi's are still race grade boots and "bulky" by most street riders standards. The main think I like about the sidi's is the braces on the side, and the heel cups. All my boots take a minute to latch on, but I feel better not having to think about it while I am riding.

The Vortices fit under straight leg jeans fine. They are much more compact than Alpinestars race boots.

Do the vortice sidi boots fit tru to size? I wear size 10.5 to 11 and have read about mc boots typically sizing either one size up or down from true size...

    Thanks guys!!!

Sidis are real consistent, I've had three different styles of mc boot, and two different styles of mountain bicycle shoes that have all fit exactly the same.

Yup--those are the lines that I'm thinking along. I've seen two heel/ankle injuries recently (one bike-related, and one not), and the recovery process *really* caught my attention.

The only thing holding me back from the Vortice is the idea of using them up at the non-replaceable parts sole; that's a lot of money for disposables. Doing the same thing with something along the lines of the B2/Fusion/Strada is easier to swallow, but they look to be a significant step down in protection.

Torn at this point between sucking it up and going with the Vortice (maybe adding some stragtegic steel screws at wear points) or going in a totally different direction with something like the new Adventure Rains. Hmmm....

The Vortice you can fit tighter/more secure to your foot, so the heel doesn't drag when you walk, like with a sloppy-fit boot. Plus, the heel is made outta some kind of plastic, so it wears real well compared to the other Sidis.

Ok, best news I heard all day (not a high bar, but....); http://www.factoryresole.com/ will put new soles on Sidi race boots for about a c-note. To pull a quote from Tarantino's latest masterpiece, "bingo!"

Old news; new news is that they do both, but you have to call for details. The can't replace with another "screwdriver cutout" Vortice sole (and didn't say what the replacement was, apart from that it would still be a Sidi), but they definitely can do it for Vertigo, Vertebra, and Vortice.

That was the only sticking point, and I hope they're still in business when/if I need that done, but I pulled the trigger last night. Woo-hoo!
