Annual Mileage Survey by Insurance Co.

Anybody else get these "surveys" yet ?? I have Farmers for the house & cars (Progressive for ZRX),, and I just got a 2nd one of these...

They appear to be basing a rate change on the miles driven, and they claim to use "external sources" to determing an 'Estimated 12-month mileage' for the upcoming year.

The first one I down-sized to under 1,000 miles, which is true as it is gas-burner, and sets in the garage.

But,, on my daily driver,, they are upping that 3 TIMES what they say is my 'current' miles driven.

Anyone know what gives? Think I'll tell Farmers I only ride the bike......

Many years ago I filled out one of those and my insurance shot way up. Don't fill it out. Go to your agent and have him/her adjust what ever needs to be adjusted.

It says on it that if you don't return it by a certain date, they will automatically set the mileage at what THEY have printed there as an Estimate.

I'm curious as to how much it will increase .vs. how much the mileage is.....

Might be only a "Calif" thing, too.....

do you have state inspections where they enter mileage into a terminal? If so it is public record and they can and will use it against you in setting your rates.

I've never returned or answered one. Never went up so far. They would poop if they knew, yet I havent had n at fault accident since I was 15.

No state inspections, the only vehicle anyone might know the mileage would be the Sienna, as Toyota does the (lifetime oil changes),, don't know if the dealer would share that info...

Or,, maybe they are just bluffing, and only making a guess...

That would be the way they get it,, the Emissions Checks,, every 2 years,, on my other car/truck,,

But this Sienna hasn't had one yet... it's an '04, and you get a few years before required on new vehicles...

Edit: Neggy,, you were right,, just that the phrase, "state inspection", didn't ring my 'equate bell' with what we call our 'Smog Checks'. (Except this time it is my newer car, & don't believe it has been smogged yet...)

State Farm sends them out about every 18 months along with a questionnaire wanting to know if the 14 yr old is driving yet.

another member here told me he keeps an extra speedo for each vehicle and therefore only drives a few hundred miles per year

In our case it was more than likely to verify the the ages of the teenagers and if we are (now) actual "Low mileage" drivers. I used to drive 50k per year (for work) and my wife drove 20k per year in personal vehicles.

I still drive 50k to 60k on the company vehicle, but since my Mother-in-Law passed away the wife drives about 6k and I drive about 3k in our personal auto's, which relates to 10% lower rates in Louisiana.

BTW - Louisiana has about 35% of the drivers driving without Insurance which drives our Rates up.

AIG used to ask during renewals. I told them I drive a company vehicle and asked what my discount would be for very low mileage

We don't have state inspections or other public mileage records in SC.
