Complete Engine hi-perf parts list....hmmmm????? Suggestions??

I have a 2005 REX with a full stainless steel Akropovic system with C/F Akro can and an Ivan's jet kit with pods. I have not installed the Akro/Ivan's parts yet. I may sell these new parts because I hear that the Akro is not suited to the 1224, as I've heard that the Akro headpipes are too small to flow enough for the stock bike, let alone the big bore.

I am contemplating a completely modified engine, and I have a few ideas, but I am hesitant at this point. I may wait till next year if the dollar amount is above my budget. I'd rather wait and do it right the first time, even if I have to wait a year, rather than only do part of the engine work this year and finish it later.

    I am considering the following:

    Muzzy 1224 big bore
Muzzy or Yosh or ZZR cams
    valve springs??? Rockers??? - suggestions
Keihin FCR carbs - 39's or 41's???? - Other options????
ignition??? I've heard that the stock ignition works better than a Dyna with a modded engine - suggestions???
Air cleaner/air socks??? I have to run something, as this bike will be run on the street - a lot!!
pistons??? Muzzy or JE or other?? Must use pump 92 Octane gas
Possibly lighten the crank??? (How well will this work with the 1224??)
Possible headwork?? Who does a great job with this??
Any parts I am forgetting to upgrade that would go well with this type of package?

I also want to use a Pingel gas petcock, but I just saw that KWICK is coming out with a Ti version, so I have to see if it flows like the Pingel. I already bought the slipper clutch hub from Moriwaki Man! I can't wait to try that out.

This bike is used for spirited street rides, mostly, with about 5 track days thrown in each summer.

No turbos, no superchargers. I need a RELIABLE bike. (Me< >Perko) I do not want a ticking time bomb. But I do want more power, within reason. I do not want a stressed out engine that won't be reliable. Any suggestions will be appreciated! I am trying to plan this ahead of time so that everything works well together. Target HP is around 180 or so, but I'll go less on HP to gain reliability.

I'd use the internet to look online more than I have, but my URL over here in Afghanistan (with the US Army) blocks nearly everything that I have tried to look up.

    Thanks for the help!

Love my set-up, priced right ...runs strong and reliable as hell. Shoot Perko a pm or Ed46 for more info. HP around 155-160 depending on who's dyno you run it on. jmho...I'm happy. And Thank You for serving our country...free drinks/dinner if you're ever in the Chi-town area.

David at WTC Outdoors in brenham, TX was doing the muzzy kit for 1060 shipped and have no turnaround time...you gotta pay the core or send yours first. you can also piece the kit thru millenium, je, etc.
    ZZR cams from zrxtex
i did double springs to be safe....rockers/cams look fine after a year/5k miles
stock carbs with dj stage 3
    k&n pods
    stock ignition
    head worked over by krexken
    muzzy meg

i did 153 with ivan's and airbox..... gotta get it done with pods/dj now.

no issues whatsoever with reliability...ran it twice in the tx mile (about 10 top speed runs), and run the piss out of it playing almost every time we ride

I love my setup as well.

Others will chime in...but you are good with:

1224 kit - I'd call ZRXTEX on all this and see what he can get you. No need to pay Muzzys for the same thing you can get elsewhere.

Either Langcourt Limited (Who I use) or Millenium can bore out your block and re-Nikasil it.

Cams - ZZR cams are great and affordable, and run perfect with stock sprockets - no cam timing adjsutment necessary.

Crank work - Marine crankshaft or APE racing. Haven't done it yet myself.
PM SCS...he has some lightened crank riding experience he can tell you about - and a sweet crank that Marine did for him.

Ignition - Do a ZX-11D ignition. Reliable, cheap and easy. Use ZX-11D double valve springs with this (as well as the inner washers - outer washers are the same as the ones you already have - again, ZRXTEX can get all this for you).

Headwork - I like ED46's work, since that is who did mine, but short block Charlie and Krexken are good choices too. Others will chime in.

Keihin FCR39's with Ramair socks is what I run, and what I would recommend. If you are going to drag race a lot get 41's, but I hear 39's are more streetable.

A Pingel duel outlet petcock and pingel dual in/dual out filter is two thumbs way up. Bling? Yes. Overkill? Yes. Sexy? Yes. Just do it. With some green fuel lines. Or color as appropriate for your ZRX from Chapparrel.

I'm happy with my '05 with the following:

Muzzy 1224 kit, ZZR cams, valve springs and rockers, 39 FCR's, stock ignition, K&N Pods, APE ported head, stock crank and petcock. Lots of torque, lots of ponies. Just take some getting used to the FCR's vs. Stockers, as the FCR's aren't as friendly when you crank the throttle open like the stockers. Other then that, absolutely no complaints here.

I started to instal a Dyna and read and read and read and they lack the level of reliability I wanted.

Oh...and with Keihin FCR flatslides...do not pass go...do not collect $200...go straight to Stealth Racing and get an FCR-AP2 accelerator pump cover and some long fuel screws which will fix a lot of that lag for you on aggressive throttle cracking at low RPM:

either way is good.... the + on the kit is that you get everything (including gaskets) all at the same time thru one source. the price was about $50 more, but it was worth it to me to just deal with one source.

ya gotta call david to get the better price.

In another month or so I will be posting dyno runs of my build w/ 1224 and Web Cams. More duration and higher lift than either Yosh or ZZR. Should make power all the way up to 12,500 rpm or so. Will be interesting.... only downside may be loss of torque at the bottom end....

Re: Complete Engine hi-perf parts list....hmmmm????? Suggestions??

Thanks for the advice guys! Sounds like I’ll end up going with Langcourt, Millenium, or WTC for the big bore, and I have no problem with sending him my block in the middle of winter in PA. THANKS FOR THE TIP that will save me lots of $$$$!!!! I don’t mind going with different vendors to get the better price as long as I do not lower quality.

I am really interested in the little tips like the double valve springs, going with a Pingel petcock, slotted cam sprockets, anything little detail to give me a couple more HP through reduced friction or less weight, etc, --good stuff like that are great tips to know ahead of time so I can plan to do it all at once while it is apart. Any tips that will increase reliability or increase HP are great.

Cams – what grind is best with the 1224 big block? I have read that it is better to have them welded and custom ground for durability reasons, but to what specs? ZZR? Yoshimura? Muzzy? What works best with the 1224? I’d like to hear from you all.

Old Skule, what are Web cams? More info, if you can.

I am leaning toward the FCR’s, in either 39’s or 41’s. I am guessing the 39’s are more “streetable.” Thanks for the tip about the 39’s with the accelerator pump cover, too, Dimora

Anyone out there who can vouch for the socks on a street bike? How about every day use, to include in the rain? I am guessing I may want to go with K&N or APE pods to keep my carbs free of dirt, huh? The bike will see more street miles than at the track.

I think that with this setup, a slipper clutch and a six speed, I should have a great street corner-carver and track day bike! I hope I am not starting a “my set-up is better than your set up” thread! I’m just fishing for good experience.

I’ll have to wait until I can get to a different computer to surf the websites for the engine work and head work. Thanks again guys!

Yosh-grind hardweld cams are $750 a pair exchange thru me. I have an exclusive on them. They eliminate the pitting that cast cams sometimes get. You do NOT need special rockers.

I just released the KWICK Gas Karbs this week:

Web Cams are hard welded and reground cams from http://www.webcamshafts.com/. I'm doing the 40b/263 setup.

They have three different grinds available for the ZRX. I'm doing the "road race" grind which is higher and longer than the Yosh or ZZR cams. They do require double valve springs and extended and hard welded rockers. I think my whole setup includng springs, rockers, ti keepers and the cams was roughly $1200 or so.

I have been doing a lot of research with different options - Muzzys kit from Muzzys, piecing the kit through various sources - Langcourt, Millenium, JE pistons (coated and uncoated), and have found that the muzzy's kit from David at WTC outdoors and ZZR cams from ZRXTEX will cost about $300 less than all other options. My question - is there any added benefit, a $300 benefit at that, to going with matched pistons to the bore? I will not be doing any racing, street only.
