    Saddest day of my life...

for my friends on here who are not on facebook and have not heard...

The day I've been fearing the most has arrived. It is time to say goodbye to my best friend. Sprocket. And I am absolutely devastated.
Although I knew this day would come, I am stricken with so much grief that it hurts so much. I am a mess right now. Almost everyone who has met me, has also met Sprocket. As he has been a part of my life for almost 11 years. I brought him with me everywhere I could. He's been to many, many motorcycle rallies ( ytraps, hal clines, Tennessee International, and almost all the KOTF ), and has been loved by everyone who has met him.
When I was in the hospital, a friend brought me a picture of me and sprocket when he was a puppy. I stared at that picture for hours, desperately wanting to get out of the hospital so I could see my boy. I missed him so much. I can only imagine that it was the same for him, not knowing what happened to me. When I was released from hospital and came home. Finally getting to be with my dogs was the best feeling in the world. So now, having to say goodbye for the last time is tearing me apart.
Sadly, Sprocket has been stricken with degenerative myelopathy. DM is similar to multiple sclerosis in people. It affects the central nervous system (CNS), which consists of the brain and spinal cord. The CNS is responsible for carrying nerve impulses or messages to and from the muscles. Axons carry these messages and are similar to electrical wires. As with electrical wires, axons require insulation. Without insulation, the message leaks out. In the progression of DM, the myelin sheath (insulation) on the axon is damaged or slowly destroyed rendering the muscle incapable of carrying out a movement.
So now, at this point, Sprocket has no control of his rear legs. And he must drag himself, and it’s getting harder and harder for him to do so. But, everything else is normal. He still has a healthy appetite, he still waits for me to help him go outside to take care of his business. And he still listens to me when I talk to him. But I can see it is slowly getting worse. And that is why this is so hard. I will miss him so much. This is going to hurt for a long time. I am so proud of my dog, he is such a good boy. I am truly blessed to have been part of his life.
You can Rest in Peace now Sprocket, Dayzee will take care of your daddy.

Our dog jesse went through the same thing. Sprocket is only 11? Have you tried glucosamine? . I think Sprocket has good years ahead. Look into it!Don't give up.

Have a spit fire Welsh Pembrooke Corgi with DM. This is our second from the same breeder. She has a wheel cart to stay mobil with the pack. She is also 11. Breeders can DNA test for the gene. Seems many breed regardless . First corgi Winston was 14 lived in his cart for over 3 years. Corgis were featured on Animal Planets Dogs 101 .

Some people go the route of a sling on a frame with an axel and 2 wheels for the dogs' back end. Some dogs get used to it. Others, it's not an option. Sucks when they seem okay otherwise.

Looking at his pic above...you named him perfectly. Condolences again. Hang in there.

So sorry you have to do this, but I can totally understand. I had to do the same thing back in 2010 - and I still have nightmares about it. One of the hardest things I have ever done. You gave him a great life, plenty of adventures, and lots of love... he knew it and I am sure he appreciates what you had to do for him today.

My heart breaks for you. I lost my best friend just over 3 years ago. I still get choked up speaking of her. You were lucky to have Sprocket for 11 years and and he was lucky to have you for 11 years. You were his best friend also.

Wow, what a great looking pup. We are all mortal. Pets are with us for so short a time. Iv'e had to lay 3 of my best friends ever down.
I held them close till they just left. It hurts us so much more than them.
At least we can do it for them while they still have some dignity before they linger on in agony like some of our parents.

    Hang in there brother.
